Time Travel For Mental Health – Feel Younger, Be Younger

Sometimes—perhaps always—developing the mind is just as important to fitness as physical exercise. Today, let’s talk about something that will make you feel young again, really. It may make you physiologically younger by changing your mindset and improving your mental health, a worthy goal.

Okay. It’s an easy, possibly free, and completely safe way to travel through time. No game. It’s real, it’s possible, it’s possible, you can do it. Hehe, everyone can do it.

Do something you haven’t done in years. Do something you used to do as a child or teenager, do it regularly, and enjoy doing. Here is an example.

I just went to take a bath. I mean a real swim, well over a mile. Yes, I swam thousands of yards in the Y pool. To me, that’s magic. Why? Well, I grew up on the swim team, and in the summer I practiced twice, morning and evening. So I smelled like chlorine all the time. You could say I smell chlorine. My eyes were always bloodshot – I didn’t have glasses then – I was always tanned, then white, looking around. Of course, being surrounded by friends while I was swimming was essential to my enjoyment. For hours after the workout, I felt a sweet fatigue in my muscles. I mean, I often felt that feeling.

Fast forward many years now. I am now 56 years old and say “many”. If I smell chlorine, I start to feel that wonderful time, and if I go in the pool and swim, it all comes back. I know I’m not as thin as I was then, I’m not as tan and slim as I was then. I know my friends aren’t in the pool with me, but it’s a fond memory of those days. When you leave the pool, the feeling of greatness and essence lasts for hours. I feel just as deliciously tired as I did 40 years ago. Exactly. It’s like a mood-altering, reality-altering drug, it’s not a drug, it’s a natural, healthy, satisfying experience, and I want that for everyone.

Now it’s your turn. Can you relive the fond memories of childhood and adolescence? Most likely, you can. Fishing, dancing, water skiing, snow skiing, playing baseball or soccer, watching scary movies, playing cards, Monopoly, traveling, camping, picnics, etc.

The possibilities are endless, but the key is to think about what you regularly do when you’re happiest growing up. Recreate as much of it as possible, i.e. smells, clothes, surroundings, music, friends.

If you played soccer in school, I’m sure just holding a soccer ball, feeling its weight, texture, and smelling its skin brings back memories and triggers those “feel good” hormones. Even the smell of the locker room seems disgusting, but it probably evokes the feeling of that time, like chlorine does to me.

If you fished as a kid, the smell of fish, the land of one of those red-and-white bobbers, the smell of the lake shore — yes, there’s a certain smell when you stand on the edge of a pond — will take you back. Opening a box of goodies brings back all kinds of memories for me, the unique sounds and smells. I immediately returned to the dock at White Sands, brother Milt by my side, and early in the morning we talked quietly about anything and everything. Pick up the cone and cast it once. It will be very good, very familiar and natural.

Have you ever played baseball? Take a bat and swing it a few times. Yes. I’m sure your blood pressure will drop instantly as you experience familiar sensations you haven’t felt in years.

If you played an instrument in school, take it. Seriously. My father is now 81 years old. In college, he played the trumpet and was in a dance group. A few years ago, my mother gave him a trumpet for Christmas. He cried. It was wonderful for him to hold it in his hand and smell the metal. He started playing again after many years. It is never too late.

If you spent many happy hours at the beach as a child, you should go back as often as possible. The smell of salt, the screeching of seagulls, the hot sun on your skin, the smell of Copperton and the sand between your toes will take you back to those beach trips years ago.

This trip is doing your brain some good. I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know exactly what happens, but I do know that it’s a way to nourish your soul. I am sure of it.

What do you mean? Don’t you have time? Too much responsibility? Are the kids keeping you too busy?

None of these reasons are good enough. Remember, you are not doing this just for you, but it will be reason enough; You are doing it for them, for your loved ones. If you find time to do things that make you feel good, you’ll be a better friend, a better spouse, and a better parent. Such experiences have the power to heal.

You’ll be motivated to help your loved ones have similarly enriching experiences because they’ll remind you of how much they meant to you. You’ll be motivated to step out of your busy life more often to create new memories that will be just as fond twenty years from now.
