How to Hold Onto Your Peace

All that we long for – peace of mind, contentment, grace, an inner awareness of simple abundance – will surely come to us, but only when we are ready to receive it with open and grateful hearts. ~ Sara Ban Bretnach

The story of a Christmas Eve skirmish in France between British and German troops takes place during the First World War. After months of war, a lone German voice began to sing a Christmas carol among the bodies of fallen comrades. A little shocked, the British soldiers followed the song with their own songs. Back and forth, the songs rose above the frozen field. Finally, French, British, and German voices, in separate languages, but with a universal tone, join in “Silent Night.” These sworn enemies then crossed into no man’s land to share hugs and Christmas greetings. Both sides have agreed to a ceasefire over Christmas.

Who do you need to reconcile with?

What mental and emotional struggles do you need to calm?

How do you stay calm amid the horrors of the Connecticut school shooting and the pressures of everyday life?

Peace is the right and privilege of every believer, given by God, demonstrated by Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit within you. When the angels appeared to the shepherds at the time of Jesus’ birth, they did not herald riches, privileges, or the end of worldly suffering. they declared”Peace on Earth’. Suddenly a multitude of the heavenly host appeared with the angel and praised God, saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, and good to men” (Luke 2:13-14). Jesus was God’s gift of peace to all mankind. He is the Prince of Peace.

Then Jesus explained. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Do not let your heart be troubled, do not be afraid (John 14:27). This part, or “doing,” is our responsibility. Great peace is available to us, but we must reject suffering and fear and reach for it. We cannot allow ourselves to think like the world.

Oh, that you would all be at peace! and this should be your wisdom (Job 13:5). We know when to shut up! Wisdom tells us to be at peace. The problem is actually doing it and biting back the stinging, sarcastic, hurtful words that react to hurt feelings or anger. Job was tired of his friends telling him what he thought and what he had done wrong. Why are we insisting that it should be? the last word or declare their rights for peace and harmony? Why is selfishness so easily ruled? Be silent and put your hand over your mouth… (Judges 18:19).

The LORD will fight for you, and you will be at peace (Example 14:14). God said He is the rewarder, the judge, the restorer. You don’t have to allow or tolerate hard feelings, anger, or jealousy. Keep calm and let God work in the situation. Remember the verse in Romans For those who love God and are called according to His purpose, all things work together for good (verse 8:28). Faith says, “Lord, I trust You to handle this.” Faith is the victory that overcomes the world and all its temptations (I John 5:4). Faith is the key to peace and all the other blessings of God. If you trust Him, you don’t have to fight for yourself.

I will both make me lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone keep me safe, LORD. (Ps. 4:8). How many sleepless nights have we spent wondering about a situation that we couldn’t change anyway? One of life’s greatest lessons is to “leave and forsake God…” Our anxious thoughts swirl at night. We feel too tired to fight, so we let them play with our minds like broken records. Round and round, the litany is unchanging and endless. Listen to hymns, soothing music (or Bible teachings) to divert your thoughts. Either you will fall asleep faster, or it will have a positive effect on strengthening your faith. Finally, faith comes by hearing… (Rom. 10:17)

Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and seek it (Ps. 34:14). How many opportunities do we have each day to make someone better? How often do we “stand still” when we offer words of praise or comfort or understanding instead? How often do we get so caught up in our own agendas and problems that we ignore the pain and suffering of others? Speace. Look for ways to be a blessing to someone else. By sharing our love and compassion, we will seek peace and be grateful for our blessings.

Yahweh will give strength to his people. The Lord will bless His people with peace (Ps. 29:11). It is important to understand that every negative thought, emotion, and action is created by the “prince of this world” who gave Adam authority in the Garden of Eden.

Satan is still confused, Who is he looking to devour? (I Peter 5:8)? The first thing we must remember at such times is that God is not the author of destruction or confusion. Jesus clearly told us, The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10). This is as true today as it was in Jesus’ day. Herod killed all male children under the age of two to eliminate his successor, who was said to be the “newborn king.”

However, remember that God sent Joseph and Mary to Egypt to keep them out of harm’s way. (He financed his trip with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.) After the Sandy Hook incident, we heard stories of courage and protection from many of those children and workers.

God is so full of light that there can be no darkness in His presence. When we allow ourselves to dwell on anger, greed, selfishness, or other destructive emotions, we are alienated from God’s power, presence, and protection. We have passed from light to darkness. Regardless of duration, moment or decade, those negative emotions and thoughts separate us from God’s peace and love. It’s not worth the price.

John 10:10 ends with Jesus saying: I have come that they may enjoy and enjoy life and have abundance (AMP). Later in the same book, Jesus affirms Peace I leave with you; my [own] I now give and bequeath you peace. I am not what the world gives you. Do not trouble your heart, do not be afraid of them. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.] (AMP).

The key to peace is to control our thoughts, words, and actions. Peace is first and foremost a choice. Our emotions will eventually support these choices, but we must first make a decision to stay calm. God gave us a choice. If our choices match His word, we will experience His peace, love, forgiveness, mercy, grace and blessings in our lives. His peace is always ready for us. However, we must step forward and proclaim it in faith. In other words, Wait, don’t let go!
