Many years ago, I became interested in the jewelry making process while traveling abroad. I used to watch silversmiths at work, imagine what they would look like when they were finished, and marvel at how they could do nothing.
But it was eye-opening to see the ways in which different countries use different jewelry styles to express their cultural identity. Why was more appealing than how?
Why do we wear jewelry? Of course, it’s not just because we have fingers and toes, they look a bit bare? Historically, jewelry has symbolized tradition, religion, wealth, sensuality, commitment, and even art. This is interesting, but what do we mean when we wear jewelry today?
In the West, as in the East, we use jewelry to express our identity. We do it a little differently. We use jewelry as a form of self-expression, just like the clothes we wear or the music we listen to. Jewelry is as much about us as anything else we do, wear, and wear.
Our approach to jewelry is actually tribal, but we’re too sophisticated for that term, so we call our tribe a market. But what is a “sweet mummy”, “IT Girl”, “fashion student”, “working mom”? They are all effective tribes. They have their own website, culture, and accepted ways of dressing and adorning themselves. Our society is fragmented, so belonging to a social group gives us clarity and a sense of belonging and enhances our identity.
Membership may and may change as people go through different stages of life, but sometimes we don’t realize we’ve moved on, which is why there are so many current change programs. All of us, knowingly or unknowingly, are affected by the formal and informal groups to which we belong.
We expect people to see things a certain way. Our brains look for patterns in the information we receive. If the brain can label incoming information, scanning becomes easier. For example, people who wear hoodies all commit crimes, or lawyers wear suits. How would you feel if you met your new bank manager in jeans? Knowing this, we all dress for certain occasions – Anyone who has come to a party dressed incorrectly will testify that it’s not a very comfortable way to spend the night!
With so much pressure on women and men to play their roles in today’s society, we go straight to our own identity and choose our clothes and jewelry accordingly. As our society has diversified and individualized, jewelry has become an important means of self-expression and confidence.
New industries have emerged to cater to more sophisticated consumers, and one such niche is high fashion. Just as designers like D&G, Gucci and Donna Karen have revolutionized the world of vintage watches, the same phenomenon is quietly happening in the world of jewelry as they ditch their old favorites in favor of fashion brand wristwatches.
Today, the jewelry market is vertical. The emerging middle class is sharply divided between designer manufacturers, the luxury elite, and the high street. With local designers and marketing savvy, these suppliers provide high fashion brand collections for women and men.
These collections are aimed at a specific market such as career women. Moods like glamour, glamour, or movements like funk or punk. These companies are selling themselves and their values through the amount of jewelry they provide, and the fact that women are listening to these marketing messages is a testament to the success of the right hand ring campaign.
