Unlocking the Potential of Your Brain by Discovering How to Think!

In the next 2 minutes you will discover one of the greatest strategies implemented by the greatest thinkers who ever lived.

When I was a student at Juilliard, one of my professors assigned me a book or article to read every month. The professor would make a statement about the book, ask me questions, and make me think about it. I should also have included a brief summary of what I read. I realized that his ultimate goal was to develop artists who were great thinkers!

One of the people I met through these books was Dr. Gerald Edelman. As a child, Dr. Edelman studied the violin and considered becoming a concert violinist. He decided to pursue a career in medicine, then won the Nobel Prize in Immunology in 1972, and began studying the human brain in 1973. He continued to perform in a series of classical music concerts at the Neuroscience Institute.

Dr. Edelman (1992) in his book Bright Air, Glowing Fire: Matters of Mind, he says that each of us has a “Darwinian brain” that evolves with the stimuli you give it! For example, a young child who takes violin lessons for 2 or more years “will improve brain function, develop strong neural connections, and adapt.”

Professor Linser also assigned The Awakening by Oliver Sacks, MD, who has written many books on the neurological histories of his patients. He was the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Professor of Clinical Neurology. Dr. Sachs learned piano as a child and continued to play throughout his life.

He says, “Music is the deepest non-chemical medicine for our patients. What we see is the organizing power of music – when abstract or schematic organization fails, it does so effectively and happily.”

Classical music has the ability to organize the brain because of its complex rhythms.

Dr. Sachs had severe Alzheimer’s disease. The patient “answered the dance music by hugging his wife, looking her in the eye, and dancing with him.”

One of his patients suffered a stroke and was unable to walk or speak. Dr. Sax brought an accordion player who played familiar songs, and the patient began to sing along with him. Music stimulates memory. “Memory is the key to self,” says Dr. Sachs, “and music evokes emotion, and emotion evokes his memory.”

I realized that there is a scientific connection between learning a musical instrument and academic and social success. Learning a musical instrument creates millions of new connections and synapses between neurons in the brain. Many scientists, doctors, teachers, writers and mathematicians in the world are musicians..

Over the years, Professor Linser and I continued to talk about the many books and articles he had read. I’ve compiled several books, articles, radio shows, and blog conversations I’ve done over the past 20 years, as well as conversations with Dr. Oliver Sacks and Dr. Gerald Edelman at his request.

I realized that Professor Linser was teaching his students to develop an Aristotelian interest in critical thinking. Aristotle makes a statement, asks a question, and prompts the student to reflect on a well-chosen answer.

Aristotle’s Ethics is all about how to live well. Family values/community, virtues: “wisdom, humility, courage, justice, friendship. Doing the right thing and making the right choice define us. Many kinds of friendship with others.”

The magic of studying Aristotle’s way of thinking is that rather than being instructed by Aristotle, the student discovers the facts on his own, helped by him. This leads us to use inductive and deductive reasoning as critical thinking methods.

The greatest gift a teacher can give his students is to teach them how to think…not what to think.
