3 Types of People Who Can’t Meditate (and How They Can Learn)
When you spend time on personal development forums, talking to curious people, or spending time with open-minded people, this topic eventually becomes a meditation. And this conversation divides into two main camps: those who swear by it; and those who tried it didn’t work.
There is a minority of people in these communities who haven’t tried it. I’m not going to talk about them today, but it’s really cool. I pay attention to those who have tried honestly and persistently and come away disappointed.
Now, let me be clear that what I am about to say is my opinion. This may be wrong, but I’m sure of it. I base this on my experience with meditation and the psychology of the unconscious mind.
I believe that over 99% of people learn to meditate. And it seems that most of the people who are unable to meditate after giving it some time fall into three categories.
Meditation does a lot for your mind and body. If you only use it for relaxation, that’s great – it’s the ideal tool. Just know that it’s like shaking a bug out of a suitcase.
It can do more. Your unconscious is the source of your emotions. Happiness and anger are not only concrete, but also complex things like motivation and anxiety.
If your emotions are out of balance or acting strange, you have options. One option is to find the cause deep in your mind and eliminate it.
People use meditation because it calms the conscious mind and provides useful tools such as patience and acceptance. In this inner peace, you can reveal and resolve your own thought patterns.
But there are people who are always like this. According to some quirks of psychology, their consciousness is always silent. Their inner dialogue is whispered or non-existent.
Does it enlighten these people?
Maybe maybe not. But if you think this describes you, my advice is:
Learn to be patient with yourself. Learn to accept your thoughts. If you can filter your thoughts, your mind will take everything away from you.
If you can judge everything they say, your best friend will stop talking to you. Treat your mind like a good friend.
Then meditation becomes easy for you. Just think about what you want to work on. You can skip the concentration and breathing techniques – they will bring you to the state where you already are.
Cultivators with different names
Some people meditate but can’t quit, focus, or stay on task. Then they try meditation and it’s not for them.
For some of these people, you have to dig a little deeper. When you ask about their hobbies, they say they like hiking, painting, swimming, and watching movies.
Perhaps their favorite thing is to play with their children. Maybe they like their job.
If you have favorite exercises, you can use them for meditation. If you often lose yourself in this activity – if it recharges you and keeps you calm, then I have good news. Such is the state of meditation.
You may find it strange that something like tennis can be a meditation. After all, tennis is all about speed, sweat and travel. But how many tennis players feel that time slows down and the world falls silent as they move to smash a 200km/h tennis ball?
Meditation is not a special class of meditation that occurs only in temples. You always feel it in your life. It’s about using, expanding, and evaluating what you already do.
Keep that experience deep in your mind the next time you meditate. Anything that gets you closer to that state is good. If you get away from it, go back to what you were doing before.
Then there are those who find it more difficult to access their unconscious mind. Their emotions were boring, their imaginations were rational, and the above explanations about playing tennis made no sense to them.
No judgment here. If you think I’m describing mentally ill people, I’m not. Some people live at a high intellectual level. There are thousands of profitable careers that need such people who can think things through without distraction.
There is nothing wrong with pursuing satisfaction instead of happiness.
If you find it difficult to meditate because you are too conscious, it might be you. When someone tells you to close your eyes and go inside, you don’t know what they mean. It’s a confusing instruction, and boy, it must be infuriating.
You can learn to meditate anyway. The question you might ask is whether it should be done.
As a general rule, exploring your unconscious mind enriches your life. It adds unconscious material to your consciousness, which opens up what you can do. It gives you more options without losing everything you have.
That being said, what you find may surprise you. Most people have a lifetime of experience dealing with strange mindless material. Random emotions, strange memories, unusual thoughts, etc., run through our heads all day long. If you’re not used to it, it will be disappointing.
My advice is to find a meditation coach. But not just any coach. You want someone who understands where you’re coming from.
Ideally, they will have gone through the exact same process. They will know how to guide you to the next step and how to handle anything that comes up.
Working with them could be the biggest decision you make.
