F1 2009 PSP Review

F1 2009 PSP

Every now and then a game comes along that you can’t wait to play. For me, that game is F1 2009 for PSP, the first official Formula 1 game since Studio Liverpool released Sports Commentary in 2007.

November 19th was the day you could once again play with your favorite F1 drivers around the best tracks in the world. But was the wait worth it?

Speech

The menus are very simple. First, you need to enter a name, country, and other relevant information that will represent you in online games and (more importantly) career mode. The main menu shows the car behind you and the options available to you. You can play fast races, grand prix weekends, world championships, careers, transients or challenges. After selecting a car in either mode, the rear car will change to your chosen team. It’s a nice touch that can go a long way in general presentation. Before each race, you will see sections of the track similar to the official TV broadcast. The graphics of the game are very good. The cars look good and the tracks are made with great detail. Admittedly, though, some songs sound a little flat. The first real problem comes when the race starts. The frames take a lot of beating at the start of the race and when multiple cars are approaching. You won’t notice it in practice, or you won’t qualify – but it will have a negative impact on your racing experience. The sound is decent. I like the engine sounds better than previous PSP F1 titles. But the sound of KERS activation is really fake and annoying. Same as the main menu music.

Gameplay

The most important thing in a racing title is to drive well. F1 2009 fails in this department. All cars drive like crazy; A little touch of the direction buttons will be enough for even the slowest of corners. It’s a hassle because it’s really hard to make small fixes. We don’t like the addition of KERS (boost button for 7 seconds per lap) to all cars in the game. In real life, only Ferrari and McLaren used it, and it’s unrealistic to see it in every F1 competitor in 2009. After a few hours of driving, we got used to the ride and it was great. But then artificial intelligence came along. PC machines tend to hit you from behind. They are too aggressive. But aside from that, we have few gripes about PC machines. They can hit walls and make mistakes just like real people. I was also surprised to see the Brawn behind me hit the first corner of the German GP.

Now I have to mention your career because it will be where you spend most of your time. An agent contacts you by email to inform you about F1 events and tests with other teams. Initially, you can try out for BMW and Toro Rosso, and if you don’t get a seat, you’ll be able to join the Force India team. So you drive the Grand Prix no matter what; You cannot be a test driver. Another layer of depth is lost in F1 2009 because most people only care about the racing. Two other complaints about career mode are that the emails are very static. They try to make it more realistic with things like “I don’t think Ferrari has any competition for the 2009 championship” but they generally don’t feel human. Another and final issue with the career is that it only lasts for 3 seasons. Two more exciting modes await you as you complete your career. First is the challenge mode, where you try to take on bigger challenges such as overtaking Hamilton or overtaking as many cars as possible. It works fine on portable systems but doesn’t excite F1 fanatics like me. Although temporary, it excites me. You can drive an entire season with a friend or with someone around the world. It’s really fun, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to test it yet.

Compared to the past

It’s hard not to compare this game to the last F1 game on the PSP system, which was F1 06. At first, F1 2009 saw a slight improvement in graphics and sound, but the game came out three years later, so it can hardly be called a success. F1 2009 seems more dynamic in terms of penalties and AI speed. A collision causes you to drive or stop. It’s so beautiful and so real. Also, the speed of the AI is commendable. We found that teams were faster at GP than others. Ferrari was running midfield in China but there was plenty of competition in Monaco. This is something we’ve never seen before in an F1 game! Timing has also improved in this game. Now your lap time will be compared to the fastest time in real life. In F1 06, times are compared to your personal best. F1 2006 wins this game in terms of commentary (which F1 2009 lacks) and gameplay.

Conclusion

F1 2009 for PSP has a lot of features. We love the little touches like the penalty system and how to handle time differences. The graphics are really nice and it’s great to finally be playing with the latest cars and drivers. But serious framerate drops dampen the gaming experience, and the handling is nowhere near what an F1 car should be.

7/10
