5 Songwriting Tips For The Lazy

Funny, being a songwriter myself, I always find that writing songs can be boring at times. But why do you feel that way? Isn’t this my passion? Shouldn’t this be something I never get bored of?

… not exactly. Everything gets boring once in a while, even the things you love the most. So I like to do things the lazy way every now and then. Surprisingly, I usually get great results!

So listen. If you’re new to songwriting, or have been doing it for a while, here are a few simple tips to get you started in minutes.

Here it is…

Step 1: Review the specific situation of the day. It can be at work, during a trip or at home. It can be with your co-workers, family or friends. Any situation that affects you only positively or negatively.

An example of this is “when you’re at work, your boss is constantly chasing you, but the only thing that keeps you going through the day is knowing that someone in the office has a crush on you”.

(above is a very dry example…but try to work with me here!)

Step 2: Write as many words as possible that relate to your situation.

Let’s follow the previous example:

angry, pain, sad, happy, excited, nervous, anxious, distressed, impatient, relaxed, stupid, sophisticated, annoying, frustrated, hostile, exotic, sexy, cool, pretty, smiley, etc.… you get the point 🙂

Step 3: Write random short sentences about your situation. Enter the words mentioned in step 2. So let’s continue our little experiment…

“It really pisses me off that he’s talking to me.” “if she knew the pain inside me” “seeing her beautiful eyes light up makes me smile” “I need to act cool and sophisticated — don’t want to be upset” “she’s making my day I don’t know what’s going to happen” “staying in this pain I do not want to” And so on. So at this point it is important to note that you don’t need to use all the words mentioned in step two. As you can see, I even started making up my own lines without words! Sometimes I put words together without realizing it. This is where the magic begins…

You can easily turn this idea into a full song. Use rhymezone.com to help you find rhyming words and other related words.

My example was very basic and simplistic — but you could use a slightly more dramatic example. You must be really wild with your ideas! Really just let it go.

Step 4: Listen to a ‘backing track’ (instrumental music) that you have no idea about. Compose a tune while you play. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just make a tune. And no need to sing the lyrics. Just hum ‘humm’ or ‘laaa’ to your heart’s content.

Why do this? This exercise subconsciously prepares you for the next step in creating melodies with your own chord progressions.

Step 5: Create SIMPLE chords on guitar or keyboard. And by simple, I mean *simple*. Maybe TWO chords in the verse and TWO chords in the chorus. Now create a melody over that chord progression. Record the song on tape. Here it is.

NOTE: If you don’t play an instrument, get in touch with someone who does. Finally, you now have half of the song 🙂

Think it’s hard to come up with ideas? Want to know more? I have *so many* things I want to share with you…
