Digital Delay – Why Does The Edge’s Guitar Have an Echo?

U2 is undoubtedly one of the most popular rock and roll bands of recent times, with many hits that are regularly played on the radio. If you listen carefully to the guitarist who calls himself The Edge, you will hear something strange – a kind of echo in the sound coming from his guitar. What is this?

Digital delay

Your ears are not deceiving you. The guitar is really resonant. The echo is created by a guitar effect called “Digital Delay”. (A guitar effect is any device that changes the sound of an electric guitar). The echo occurs because the digital delay internally records the last two seconds of what was just played and waits (or delays) a bit before playing back the few seconds that were just recorded. For example, you play tra-la-la on a guitar connected to a digital delay. All that comes out of the amp is tra-la-la, tra-la-la, tra-la-la.

Two basic settings

There are two main settings you can control when using the delay effect. The first setting determines how fast the echo will be. This is called the delay period. The longer the delay, the more time there is between each echo. Delay times are usually specified in millisecond increments. There are 1000 milliseconds in 1 second. This means that if you set the delay time to 1000 milliseconds, you will hear the guitar sound repeating itself every second.

The second setting determines how many times the echo repeats. This number can be between 1 and infinity. Setting it to two will result in two echoes after playing the guitar as in the previous example. Let’s say you play a tra-la-la on a guitar with a double-tuned digital delay. All that comes out of the amp is tra-la-la, tra-la-la, tra-la-la. This is the first tra-la-la sound, followed by two echoes: tra-la-la and tra-la-la. If the number of echoes is set to infinite, the echoes will repeat over and over again until the delay is turned off.

Stand or pedal

Digital delay effects units come in many shapes and sizes. You can buy a rack-mounted unit with multiple controls, or you can use the more traditional digital delay of a guitar pedal. Most guitarists like to use pedals when playing live. You step on the pedal once to turn the delay on and again to turn the delay off. This way you can change the guitar sound from a “clean” effect sound to a delay sound during a single song.

Why use digital delay?

Why would you want to use a digital delay on an electric guitar? For starters, having a bit of reverb on the guitar makes it sound fuller. It almost sounds like multiple guitars are being played instead of just one. For multi-note solos and guitar parts, digital delay adds complexity to the part. Delayed notes blend with delayed notes to create rich complex passages that cannot be achieved with pure guitar.
