Triplets Vs Eighth Notes

Have you ever tried to do two different things at the same time? You guessed it, like patting your head and rubbing your belly, right?

Sometimes we see in music one hand playing triplets and the other hand playing eighth notes.

What is a triplet? Triplets are three equal notes that share the same amount of time as a quarter note, two eighth notes, or a sixteenth note.

A triad is a smooth (curved line) and one of the 3 notes above or below the group notes.

So you might be wondering if you’re playing two notes in one hand and three notes in the other. Importantly, none of the notes within the beat are aligned except for the first note.

You should enter two equal notes on each beat with one hand, and three equal notes in the same amount of time with the other hand.

It’s tricky because it sounds like the two hands don’t connect to each other.

Here are some steps to help you play triads against eighth notes.

1. Slap the triad loudly while listening to the metronome with a steady beat. Hear and feel the pounding in your head.

2. Play a scale with eighth notes rising and triplets falling.

3. Divide the batter into six equal parts. Eighth notes fall on the first and third beats of the sixth.

A triplet occupies the same space as two notes of that value. If you say a three-syllable word, say strawberry, then it makes sense that the triplets should be the same length.

It is recommended to say the words “step long” out loud as you play each triad to get the right rhythm.

Then, the first, third, and fifth notes of the sixth section are played as a triplet. As a result, the second eighth note appears immediately after the second third.

I usually count to six every time I play two hands (one, two and) and put each note and triple in the right place. With practice you will get it. Hear each note fit into the rhythm.

Soundtracks like John Williams’ Star Wars (Main Theme) are great examples of what a trio can be, and how exciting it can be to play. Remember that triplets are not always the same repeated notes, not only in classical music (Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata), but also in the blues. Remember that a triad is a combination of two notes played at the same time with the same meaning.
