In a marketing business, you would think that a client would come to me for business. But ironically, when a client comes to me for marketing services, there’s more to the client than meets the eye. Clients need people they can trust. Customers need friends. Clients need reliable helpers who can do what they can’t do, and do it well. Clients need reliable business partners to lean on when they need guidance and advice. Customers need all these things but don’t want to pay too much for them. Customers need to get these things when they need them, at that moment, without waiting in line. After all, customers are busy people with many important tasks, including making their business a success. It’s the rare customer who recognizes that you and he have something in common.

No, customers are primarily selfish with only their own concerns. You’ll need them when you call. Otherwise, they won’t call. Of course, in today’s economic climate, if you’re running a business, you should consider it a blessing to receive a call from a customer who needs help. This is your bread and butter. Furthermore, the reason they can be freed from myopia is that they are paying you to help them. Not vice versa.

Don’t forget that the call may interfere with meeting the needs of other important customers who come first. It’s an exercise in tact and diplomacy that gives you the right things to say to meet all customer requests within the time limit. When I’m working on multiple tasks at once, I approach it by figuring out how many steps there are in the process, how long each one will take, and how quickly it can be completed. For a small business owner or self-employed person (like me), this usually means working morning, noon, night, 24/7. This is not an exaggeration. I do my best, minus the time for personal hygiene, eating, sleeping, and an hour of exercise every day, and it works flawlessly! Of course, I admit that I am very robotic about everything in life that is good for business. The reason is that I can easily multitask without losing focus from the most important use of my attention.

For example, using one of my many software programs to design, write, produce, improve or convert any of the many tasks I do every day, while answering a simple greeting without fail. People criticize me for sounding like a record. We laugh about it and move on. Not only does predictability benefit my business, but my clients appreciate it when they can make a phone call or two without having to wade through the mud of phone calls and reception desks to try to speak to me directly. Sure, they sometimes get my voicemail, but I always call back and never wait for them.

I must say that a few years ago, when I ran a full-fledged business office in the largest city near me, my working hours were very different. Even on the harshest days of winter, commuting has eaten up a significant portion of my ability to continue plowing through my workload. I believed that time like this was best spent as a “creative break,” as one German music professor at Bard College put it. It’s time to think, strategize, and take stock of the business as a whole. However, I’m short on time because I’ve been smart enough to realize that closing the busy office that I’ve been proud of over my 35-year career is an invaluable luxury in today’s economy, and moving home is the best option for many reasons. much more convenient.

First of all, I have a life now! You might ask how can I make a living if I work 24/7?!! Well, I definitely work from home because I love what I do. Here are the main differences:

  • Instead of getting up at 4am, putting on my business clothes, reading a few newspapers over breakfast, and driving an hour to work, I got up at 8:15am to run up and down the stairs for 20 minutes of exercise (2,500 steps in total!) and a small breakfast. drink, I check my e-mail in my comfortable office in the dining room, dressed in shorts, a T-shirt, and socks. My work day usually starts at 9am, which is typical for most office workers.

  • Instead of wearing high heels that kill a good part of the day (not to mention my feet!) and driving to the occasional client meeting, I stay home and avoid seeing anyone.   • Instead of stopping at the grocery store and gas station, the occasional traffic jam, and then taking a longer-than-usual detour to make dinner, I’m now walking twenty or so in a rat-like car to get out of the office late. -Every day around 4:30 walk with my husband for a minute, continue working until 6:30 and after 9 productive hours, start cooking dinner. Now I’m lucky to have a retired husband/life partner who does all the shopping.

  • Instead of waking up at 4am to end the day at 9:30pm and trying to get enough sleep to start it all over again, I can now watch the end of a Yankee game most nights if they’re playing around 10. the time when you stop work after dinner to watch TV and eat an apple. Robot’s bedtime is now midnight, which is about 8 hours of sleep per night compared to my previous average of 5.5 hours. It gave me my life back!

But many things have changed in the business world since the recession. It is not surprising to hear about people who work from home. It’s been great to have an office over the years where people come for frequent meetings or to check evidence. There were times when I flew over Manhattan in the now-restricted airspace, sometimes in a helicopter, using a gyroscope and a long rental lens to spend an entire day taking high quality photos on the ground! Times have changed and so has my industry. We’ve become an all-accessible online culture with affordable high-quality digital photography and emailed PDF proofs. People are more conservative than ever when it comes to business expenses, and the cost of gasoline and everything else has limited the way we all do business. As a result, how much we charge has become a matter of feeling.

I’m fortunate to have come to a place in my life where money is no longer a life-or-death, sink-or-swim issue, so I have the freedom to negotiate a fair price with long-term clients who express concern about lost revenue. Everyone felt the decline in business. When you get to a certain age, you realize that life doesn’t last forever and that it’s more important to live for the pleasure it brings than to achieve the arbitrary dollar amount you’ve always wanted. My house and cars are all paid for and I’m guaranteed a relatively adequate investment, so it’s more important to me to have clients who seek out my mind and skills and keep me busy with interesting work than trying to raise money. good luck I’m also lucky (and have worked for most of my career) that I’ve never had to look for work.
