How to Overcome Emotional or Compulsive Eating

Have you ever been so lonely that you just wanted to grab that ice cream tub from the fridge and eat it while the tears flowed? Or have you been so happy that you ate so much while laughing and talking to others about your exciting event? Yes, we all love to eat regardless of the situation. Food is the basic necessity of life. Even without being overly emotional, we eat because it’s a way of life.

Everyone knows that we eat and eat to be healthy. But eating too much can lead to excess weight, which is bad for health. Being overweight can lead to stress. I know, I’ve been there. I was naturally thin, but as I got older, my metabolism slowed and I put on more weight on the scale. But I got through it. I won’t write about how I lost weight here, but I want to focus on emotional eating. One of my online friends encouraged me to write this. She broke up with her boyfriend and could have moved on, but now she’s excited again. Well, well…

We all have great days and terrible days. Now some people eat more when they are emotional or stressed. I don’t know why, but eating makes us feel better. But if you eat too much, you will gain excess weight, and it is not easy to lose it. So, what motivates us to become emotional eaters? Try asking yourself these questions:

– Have you had the pain of being separated from your loved one lately?

– Have you ever been stressed at work?

– Are the family and personal problems that worry you unresolved?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you may be an emotional eater. Assess yourself – do you eat even when you are not hungry? I was an emotional eater. In times of anxiety, I turn to “comfort foods” like ice cream, chocolate, cake, donuts, and other treats. Until I gained too much weight and realized my clothes no longer fit. It’s not just about being fit and maintaining the body shape I want. It’s all about being healthy. So let me share how I overcame my emotional eating disorder:

Receive

I have admitted that whenever I am stressed or feeling emotional, I binge eat. I believe this is the first step in overcoming emotional eating. If you’ve already accepted this fact, you’ll find it easier to stop and think whenever you feel frustrated or want to bite into a large slice of pizza because things aren’t going your way.

“Am I really hungry?”

That’s something you should ask yourself before you reach for that ice cream cone or bite into that big chocolate bar. I read on the internet (sorry, forgot where I got this info) that whenever you “think” you’re hungry, drink a glass of water first, as thirst can be confused with hunger. The same can be applied to compulsive eating. When you feel anxious, drink a glass of water first. Then think and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” before eating.

Exercise

This is one habit I’ve developed and I’m very proud of the fact that I avoided compulsive eating for the first time. That time I had a rough night at work (I worked nights) and when I got home in the morning I was tempted to order a fast food burger but changed my mind. But I changed my clothes and put on my shoes. I ran and circled the neighborhood. It was the first time I saw the colors of the neighbor’s house, the woman with 5 cats, and the happy children walking to school. It seems like I just moved in, but I’ve been living in the same neighborhood for over 5 years. After working up a healthy sweat, I went home, took a quick shower, and ate breakfast (a healthy meal without burgers and donuts) feeling blissful. Yes, I didn’t overeat.

Divert your attention

What if you suddenly feel nervous, agitated or moody? You may focus on other things. What I do is I write it down on paper or in my journal (yes, I keep a journal.) Or you can listen to good music or watch a good show – just avoid reaching for the pop corn. Or, if possible and safe, take a walk outside. Just walk calmly and breathe. Besides eating, do something else to focus on, unless of course you’re really hungry.

Treat yourself

I’ve never strayed from my favorite sweets like ice cream, donuts, cake, and chocolate. Overcoming compulsive eating doesn’t mean you have to give up the things you love (at least, in my opinion). What I do is I eat them rarely and only to reward myself. Just like the time I was able to finish all my DIY wedding invitations, I was ecstatic and thought I deserved a prize. So I took three scoops of my favorite ice cream. Yes, I still had ice cream, but I didn’t eat the entire tub. I got three scoops because I believe I deserve it. And that’s it.

Overcoming emotional eating is not an easy task. In some cases, you may need professional counseling to help you improve your health by relaxing, improving your critical thinking skills, and controlling your emotions. Seek professional help and involve your family.

Remember, I’m not a professional. I am just sharing my experience. It is better to talk to an expert in this field.
