Choosing a Microphone for Home Recording and a Home Studio

In any case, choosing a microphone can be a daunting task. There are many types of microphones for many different applications. It’s no different when choosing a microphone for home recording or a home studio.

As a recording producer, many artists and home recording enthusiasts ask me, “What kind of microphone should I get for home recording?” is often asked. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the perfect microphone for all recording applications, smart choices can be made when choosing recording equipment and recording microphones.

The AKG 414 ranges from $500 to $1,000 depending on capsule options and how new it is. The AKG 414 is a condenser microphone with a polar pattern that dictates the direction in which the microphone picks up sound. For example, Cardioid receives sound in front of the microphone. Bidirectional picks up sound from the front and back, omnidirectional picks up sound from around the microphone, and hypercardioid focuses heavily on the front.

The new C414 XLS has all these models and more. A total of 9 models can be selected from the switch located behind the microphone. The 414 has selectable pads that reduce the level of sound coming into the microphone. If you put your mic on something loud, like a drum or guitar amp, you can attenuate (reduce) the mic’s input. It works for guitar amps, drums, some horns, and even some singers. This mic is one of my favorites for female vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, and percussion. The 414’s excellent high-frequency response and versatility make it one of my favorite home and professional user microphones.

Another mic option under $1,000 is the Shure SM-7. This mic is a classic and at just $300, it’s very affordable for home recording. The Sure SM-7 is a staple of rock and rap music styles and is often used for male vocals. You’ve probably heard this mic on tons of records from Michael Jackson to John Mayer and on almost every radio station. The SM-7 is used for voiceovers and is a favorite of radio DJs. The Shure SM-7 microphone has a low input level, so you can boost the volume of the microphone pre-amplifier. I use this mic for my $10,000 bathtub mic, mostly for rock and rap.

As a music producer, I often get asked the microphone selection question. Like most people recording at home, your budget is probably limited. With the AKG 414 and Shure SM-7, you should be able to handle a lot of recording applications and you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck.
