Traditional Dances Of Kenya

Kenyan traditional dances are the most diverse and popular dances in Africa. The different types of folk music are based on the different ethnic groups found in the country. Each tribe has different culture, language, dance and music. Drums are the most popular musical instrument used in many dances performed across the country. Other popular tools include; bells, horns, guitars, flutes and whistles.

Music and dance come from Kenya’s rich culture, which can be categorized as folk, traditional and international. Isikuti, the Luhya name for the drum, is a traditional dance of the Luhya people of Western Kenya. Paired men and women sway in their dance style to the beat of drums, bells, whistles and horns.

Masai communities have structured dances for various occasions. For example, the Masai Leap Dance, called “Adamu” in the Masai language, is a dance performed by Masai warriors. As the other warriors stand in a circle as they sing, they take turns leaping into the air to demonstrate their strength and endurance. The Masai community does not use any musical instruments to play its folk songs. Women, on the other hand, wear bells and rattles that make a noise when they sing.

Both Kamba and Chuka are famous for their acrobatic dances. They have a unique drumming style where the long drum is bent forward between the thighs. Taarab is another type of traditional music in Mombasa. It consists of African and Arab influences. In this dance style, men, women and young people sing Swahili poems and dance to the rhythm. The people of Mombasa have a unique way of dressing and most of the people speak Swahili. Today, Taarab is still popular in the coastal region.

Traditional Kenyan dances have become more modern with Western and foreign influences. The guitar is the most popular instrument used in international music. Many forms of modern music have evolved, including reggae, hip-hop, jazz, rap, Afro-Fusion, and Congolese pop. All forms of contemporary music are very popular among Kenyan youth, especially in urban areas. Popular contemporary musicians include Mighty King Kong, Eric Wainaina and Maji Maji. With the spread of Christianity in Kenya, another form of dance called gospel music emerged and spread throughout the churches.
