Music for Kids

Even if music isn’t their main interest or hobby, your child will be getting a lifetime of musical training.

My experience is from my now 13 year old son. He started piano lessons at the age of 6, which he learned and loved very well. He wasn’t necessarily great at it, but he did a good job. He never sat down to play for pleasure, but he always worked on his lessons and enjoyed playing the songs the teacher gave him.

By the time he was 11, his interest in the piano had waned, and his teacher had moved and stopped teaching. My son wanted to quit and now he’s not interested. I encouraged her to continue with it, but after another 6 months with another teacher, my son didn’t want to practice, so I let her go and move on.

Now he’s 13, his pursuit of math and science takes a back seat. I believe his musical training will always be with him and his understanding of music helps him in his academic pursuits. He is now interested in playing the piano again. If he sticks to it, great, if not, the musical skills he learns will enhance his skills in other areas of study.

Playing a musical instrument involves many brain processes. You need to order verses, choruses, bridges, verses, etc. You incorporate a timed count like 4/4, 3/4, etc. into your feel. In music, it’s important to look ahead or remember what’s next. You listen and use your ears carefully and purposefully. You need to use your hands, arms and fine motor skills. Your eyes are involved in reading and interpretation. When you read music, your brain translates what you read into your hands and fingers. You have to figure out if your ears are coming out right! Wow! How much brain power is used to play music? And… when you put your own annotations on the music you’re actively creating.

By applying the creativity I learned playing music, I was able to “get up” and “get over” when I was feeling down.

Conclusion: Learning music helps in all areas of life. Playing music is just smart. By getting a musical instrument in the hands of a child, this world will be full of creative and intelligent people.
