Why You Must Stay On Course
I believe that we all want to express something: an idea, a theory, an opinion or a statement. I believe that the majority of people like to creatively express these ideas, theories and statements. Creativity comes into our minds and challenges us to create. Given the opportunity, most or all of us would love to work in the creative and entertainment industries because that’s where we can express ourselves in the most creative way possible.
So there are many of us who do art, acting, music, photography, modeling, writing, designing, and crafting. We love doing them for many unique reasons, and it would be ideal if we could do them for life. Why do we need to go to work every day and do things we don’t like rather than things we like?
If someone has a talent, natural ability, or even years of knowledge and experience in one of the expressive arts, it would seem like a waste to suddenly stop dreaming and hoping. as a whole.
At any given time, an individual in the creative and entertainment industry can be classified into one of the three groups described below.
1) People who have given up on the idea: This group may have already admitted that being a rock star was their teenage dream and the goal of their many hours of singing and songwriting. However, it will be too late to have a career now: now they are married or have children, etc…etc. If we are not careful, we may remain in this phase for the rest of our lives. I always wonder what could have been, and live bitterly because of what I may not know.
2) People who are still hopeful but aren’t doing anything to achieve their goals, but want to get back to them later: They are now doing something else, like selling, working in a call center, or even managing a manufacturing plant. However, they don’t devote time, money or effort to achieving their goals of making music and taking photos. I think they can come back later ‘when they have time’. Maybe after they get married, have their first child, have their second child, get a promotion, or pay off their debt, whatever the unique circumstances.
3) People who are willing and able to spend time, effort and money to develop their art and talent: People in this group are doing something with their art and talent. They still believe in the idea that they can be who they want to be without bursting through years of “reality checks”. They may have actually finished their painting or may have just sold it. Maybe they’re walking the catwalk or designing a logo for a client right now. Or it could be preparatory work, such as preparing their first portfolio exhibit or reading a book to learn how to protect their copyright. Regardless of how much effort they put in, as long as they take an active step, the person will be in this group.
In the early stages, we experience many disappointments and disappointments in our ‘career’. We can’t help but feel defeated when we begin to believe that our work doesn’t produce the response we hoped for or expected, and perhaps we’re only fooling ourselves, and that we should give up our foolish hopes and dreams.
However, isn’t it obvious to start taking action again (stage 3) after thinking about all sorts of excuses for a while (stage 2)? You realize over and over again that no matter what happened in the past, what happens in the future, no matter what happens, “this” is still what you want to do.
After years of going through this cycle, I decided years ago that no matter what I do, no matter what “career” decision I make, it must advance or support my creative endeavors. It makes more sense because every time I tried to suppress it, try to ignore it, pretend the urge wasn’t there, all I did was waste my time. I’ve learned to embrace my urge to express myself creatively and accept that it’s a part of me, and the less time I spend being defeated, the faster I can work on the things that really matter. Maybe you can learn something from my experience, and if you’re going through the same thing, I hope you don’t spend most of your life thinking that your “passion” isn’t what you want to do. Because honestly, what better way to make your life your dream?
