Playing Guitar 9 – Playing with Other People

So you can pick up your first guitar, learn a little about playing, have a few songs, and get through the Blues. Now you can start playing with other people! This is where you will make the most progress while playing. When you make music with other people, you learn what works and what doesn’t, how to play in time, and how to work with others! Musicians need other musicians to play songs with, so this is one of the most important skills you can develop!

The hardest part is generally finding like-minded people to play with. If you’re in school, you’ll know who the other musicians are – talk to them, see what they’re interested in, and set up a jam session. If you’re not in school, I suggest going to a guitar shop or music store in every town, where lots of local players hang out. You can also go online and look for local forums for people who want to play.

Now that you’re together, it’s a good time to “feel” each other out. A good start is to play the 12-bar blues, as it will be familiar to everyone.

Here are some tips to get you started playing:

o Listen! Making music is about listening to other players as well as just playing. Make sure what you play doesn’t “step on another player’s toes”. It means you don’t overplay and let someone else express themselves. You will have plenty of time to do your thing.

o Have a great time! This will be the hardest part for new players who haven’t played with other people often. Because the drummer is the “metronome” of the band, I always tried to give him time. Remember that rhythm is the main characteristic of music. People relate to it first. Many conductors have said, “It’s better to hear you play the wrong note at the right time than the right note at the wrong time.” If you play the right note at the wrong time, everyone knows you made a mistake. If you play the wrong note at the right time, people think you meant it.

o Try to keep your voice down. This is difficult for beginners but very important. If it gets too loud, no one can hear what other people are doing. Leave your ego at the door. Make it loud enough to hear yourself, then turn it down a little. You will listen to yourself well, and most importantly and necessary, you will listen to everyone else.

o Be pleasant. Everyone has their own opinion about what is good, what is beautiful, what is not. Don’t be a doormat, but don’t judge someone personally. And that’s when people get angry and things fall apart.

o Consider learning a few songs the next time you play together. Once everyone has decided on 4-5 songs, make sure everyone has a copy of the song. Now you have the tunes – LEARN THEM! Start your professional reputation by knowing the tone and being ready for the next jam.

Try to make sure you can meet other musicians as often as possible. This interaction you have with others is really the meat we want. Between gigs I try to find an open mic party somewhere. I go to these events every chance I get because I get the chance to play with different musicians. great players are sitting.

Which brings me to another point – try to find players who are better than you, but they won’t want to keep playing with you. Better players make you level up your game and you become a stronger player. Also, they are willing to part with pearls of wisdom that we might struggle with for a long time to learn.

Now find other players and make it your own! Best of luck to you and your future guitar adventures!
