George Jones – His Faith in God and the Woman Who Loves Him

I think it’s fair to say that George Jones wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for his God and his loving and caring wife, Nancy. This will be very sad for his beloved and devoted country music fans, including myself. Today he is very much alive at almost seventy-five.

His love-hate addiction to whiskey and cocaine nearly killed him. His very sick mentality drove him to dangerous levels of self-loathing and violence against others. Even his family and friends couldn’t believe his transformation from good to bad.

His once highly successful music career no longer mattered to him. His priority was feeding his addiction at any cost. He did not come to the scheduled match. This reputation earned him the nickname “no-show” Jones. He was hospitalized many times due to drug and alcohol abuse.

In 1980, at the age of forty-nine, at the height of his addiction, Jones delivered the most famous and successful song of his career. He no longer loved her today It spent eighteen weeks at number one on the Billboard country charts. It won her a CMA Award for Single of the Year. He was riding high, and you can take that meaning both ways. He had no idea that the song would be so successful. “This is the sickest song I’ve ever heard or sung,” he says at the end of the video. But it’s not hard to tell how weak, sick and tired he was from the video.

In 1981, he was to meet the only woman who saved him. Her name is Nancy Sepulvado. Little did she know that her new boyfriend would lead her down a path of betrayal she never imagined or dreamed of. He saved her from death many times. Jones admitted today how patient and strong she was with him, and how she was never boring. Ironically, she was with her man and they were inseparable through good times and bad.

In 1983, Nancy Sepulvado became Mrs. George Jones. They seemed happy, but the worst was yet to come. Accepting his addiction and recovering took years. His paranoia made him a monster to live with. He even beat Nancy a few times, but she never left him. His condition worsened and he had to undergo open heart surgery. He could feel himself slowing down and unable to keep up his speed towards Hell.

Years later, in 1996, he wrote an autobiography with Tom Carter. I lived to tell it all. At that time, he certainly had the courage to acknowledge his past failures and accept them. Nancy will feel better and rest.

Unfortunately, as with the book, its shortcomings did not end there. He made the same mistake as many other alcoholics and drug addicts – he thought he could cut back on his use and develop a different pattern without completely abandoning his demons. He quit cocaine, but thought he could do with less alcohol.

Three years later, in 1999, Jones crashed his car into a bridge about a mile from his ranch in Franklin, Tennessee. This time he barely survived to tell it all. He was hospitalized and was not expected to survive. A fifth of whiskey was found in his car, and there was speculation in the press that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

From that day on, Jones was a changed man for the better. His healthy lifestyle and newfound relationship with the new born Christian fit him well. He’s been on the straight and narrow since his near-fatal accident and finally laid his demons to rest.

His wife, Nancy, contributed greatly to his recovery and to his success and happiness today as an entertainer and recovering alcoholic. He looks healthy and happy, following his schedule of over a hundred tours a year.

If one can imagine big stars like George Jones and the famous friends and acquaintances he’s known along his fifty-plus years of entertainment, then some addicts themselves must find it a daunting task to stay clean and sober. I speak for myself and his fans when I say that we are very proud of him and adore him. His reputation is gone.

Two apt lines for Nancy Jones from her husband, George, would be recorded on her earlier recordings: “I’ve had good luck, bad luck, bad luck – that’s true – but I always hear. I’m lucky with you.” Another said, “He is my rock that I lean upon. He is the sunshine of my day, and I will not forsake him.” Thank God and Mrs. Jones, George “Sophisticated” Jones is here today.
