The Life and Career of Stephen Dorff

Stephen Dorff Jr. was born on July 29, 1973 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of award-nominated country music songwriter Steve Dorf, who has collaborated with such notables as George Strait and Clay Walker. He also wrote the script for several TV shows, making it a real showbiz family. Steve and his wife have another son, Andrew, who is a songwriter like his father.

Although Dorf was born in Atlanta, his father’s work was mostly in Los Angeles, so the family moved there, where Dorf and his younger brother grew up. He attended several private schools in the area, where he was often expelled. By Dorf’s own count, he was expelled from various schools in Los Angeles at least five times.

Despite trouble at school, Hollywood casting directors seemed to love the fresh-faced boy, and Dorff soon became a child actor. He first appeared in several commercials for products such as Mattel toys and Kraft foods. In the mid-1980s, he moved on to bigger acting gigs and became active in film and television roles. His first gig was in 1985 when he made a guest appearance on the hit TV show The New Leave it to Beaver. The same year, he made a guest appearance as Scott on the classic comedy series Diff’rent Strokes.

Dorff did not make a single appearance in 1986, but made a comeback in 1987 with the first part of the TV movie Love and War with Jane Alexander and James Woods. Later that year, he made his first feature film, the horror film The Gate. Not only was it his first major film, but his starring role also attracted the attention of many casting directors who were eager to cast Dorff in their films, despite his escalating struggles at school.

1988 was a big year for the young actor, with a total of four made-for-TV movies. By 1989, he was again making guest appearances on television, interspersing these appearances with many television movies.

Many children find the transition to becoming adult actors very difficult and many act out, protest, and use drugs and alcohol to solve their problems. Although Dorf was kicked out of several schools, he admitted to smoking and partying in his youth, but was never arrested or used drugs. He believes that his mother and father do not allow him to control him and turn him completely wild.

Unlike his peers, Dorf easily transitioned into adult roles, especially in feature films. His role as Stuart Sutcliffe in Backbeat, a film about the early days of the legendary group The Beatles, was a major breakthrough that made him a true adult actor. Dorff received critical acclaim for his portrayal of the tragic “fifth Beatle” and paved the way for future productions of equally iconic roles.

After Backbeat, Dorff began working at a rapid pace, appearing mostly in feature films, averaging three to four films each year. One of his more notable roles was in films like I Shot Andy Warhol where he played the man who shot Andy Warhol. However, it wasn’t until 1998 when he played head vampire Deacon Frost in the vampire hit It starring Wesley Snipes that his career really took off. He received critical acclaim for his villainous turn, which was a major departure from his usual roles.

He continued to work in films and even appeared in the occasional music video. Many wondered when the busy actor would settle down, but Dorf was in no rush to get married or have children. In fact, the 40-year-old actress has never married a man and keeps her life a secret.

Dorff remains as busy as ever, starring in the 2013 crime drama Officer Down opposite Bones star David Boreanaz and action star Stephen Lang. In 2014, she is slated to appear in at least two more films, including the lead role in “Oliver Contract” with David Stratford and the ensemble drama “Geography of the Heart.”
