Homeschooling Cheaply

America’s schools are failing to educate our children, so more and more families are considering homeschooling. However, the economic climate prevents many of them from doing so because of the misconception that homeschooling is expensive. Even training catalogs and websites do not help dispel this perception.

Many people don’t realize that homeschooling doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, with an Internet connection, a printer, a good public library, and a little ingenuity, you can start homeschooling almost for free. These and a few other “school” supplies can be purchased regardless and you’re all set. start your homeschooling journey.

The Internet is full of free educational resources. Everything from worksheets to maps, videos, sheet music, classical art, lesson plans, and full curriculum (yes, that’s right, FULL curriculum) is available for free. Some may have additional paper and ink costs to print the page(s), but compare that to the cost of the curriculum and you’d be surprised. For example, a Saxon Math 3rd grade home study package usually costs $60-$70. With this, you will receive a teacher’s guide, two student workbooks, and an “appointment book” – a calendar to track the student’s progress in 140 lessons. For the price of paper and ink, if you prefer, you can download and print 180 third grade maths lessons, along with a teacher’s guide from the University of Plymouth, UK. (And you can do the same for every grade K – 12.) Talk about affordable homeschooling – which would you prefer?

A good (or at least co-op) public library can save a lot of money for cheap homeschoolers. The library’s extensive collection includes textbooks for both teachers and students, as well as fiction and non-fiction books that can be used to creatively explore almost any subject or topic you want or need to teach. A “sparse” library with a collaborative and viable interlibrary loan program can sometimes be better than a large library with a poor ILL system, because your options may be wider and richer. Don’t limit yourself to the children’s section either. The “grown up” side of the card catalog can often be of good service, especially if the teacher needs to learn before teaching.

Combine the many free resources on the Internet with a good library, and the possibilities for low-cost homeschooling are astronomical. There are sites that outline complete K – 12 literature-based programs. There are sites that list hundreds of literature-based unit studies of varying degrees. Use these free lesson plans along with library literature to study throughout the year. Some sites provide free printables to accompany your lesson plans to give you and your children even more material.

Homeschooling can be done cheaply and effectively. It takes a little time, effort, creativity, and courage, but if cost is holding you back, you don’t have to. Homeschooling doesn’t have to be a scary or expensive endeavor. It is possible to build your child’s education without building it.
