Dining Around Austin

This article will talk about some great and fun food in Austin, Texas. I want people to understand why they move to Austin and the surrounding areas. In the last few years we have become the mecca for some of the best live music in the country. We are called the “Live Music Capital of the World”.

Not only do we have music, but we also have lakes, mountains, international parks, tons of museums, tons of tourist attractions, and a huge amount of dining options. If you’ve ever been to Austin, you’ll know that our catchphrase is “Keep Austin Weird.” Some parts of Austin are weird, some parts are not, but I want to give you a taste of both. I’m not a paid reviewer, I don’t have a champagne taste, and I’m not a foodie. I just love to share my favorite places to visit and places to eat, from fancy clothes to great food.

Most tourists go to my favorite spot on Lake Travis. In addition to dining, Oasis has become a place for margaritas and sunsets. The Oasis Tower towers above Lake Travis with breathtaking, panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountain country.

As the sun sets, all the spectators applaud the beauty of the lake and the end of the day. It’s rare to find such a peaceful scene, but luckily, Austin has plenty of them. The food at Oasis offers a variety of dishes including nachos, burgers, steaks and salads. Again, it’s all about the sights here, but it’s a must-do when you’re in Austin. Oasis is located on Hwy 620 near CR 2222.

Another destination is Salt Lick in Driftwood, Tx. This is original, rustic Texas barbecue. Bring your own drink and sit down family style to enjoy some of the best barbecue in the world. Juicy brisket, ribs, and ham are piled high on a large plate with sides of homemade potato salad, coleslaw, and mmmmm good beans. There is no need to dress up for the occasion, everyone is happy in shorts and a shirt. It’s a simple dining experience that will make your mouth water. Get a big group, they are equipped for it and will accept it. RM 1826 located in Driftwood. County Line is my second favorite and I can’t say enough about the best barbecue in the world.

Now, for the snob plug – I love all three of these restaurants for their great steaks, great seafood, unique atmosphere, and great customer service. Those are:

Finn & Porter, McCormick & Schmicks, Trulaks. OMG!! Each serves fresh seafood daily, and I’ve never had anything less than wonderful at one of these restaurants. Trulucks has fresh all-you-can-eat Florida stone crab claws every Monday night. Make it a ritual.

McCormick & Schmicks is now also in Doman (high end store), try the salmon – Oh Baby it’s divine. Finn & Porter has excellent grilled oysters with melted Gruyere, lemon garlic bear sauce and onion relish. To die. These beautiful establishments make a first date and a lasting impression. The dress is more elegant.

My favorite place to eat on my birthday is Fonda San Miguel on North Loop Dr. This is a top restaurant and has been in business for over 30 years. It is the second one that specializes in Mexican cuisine. Dining at Fonda San Miguel is always a treat for me, so my birthday is extra special.

The ceviche is delicious with black beans (a personal favorite), but my favorite is the enchiladas suizas covered in sweet white cheese and sour cream. My family also prefers the stuffed chile relleno, which is very tasty. If you haven’t tried this unique restaurant, make a reservation, it’s always full. For the best Tex-Mex in Texas, run to Rio Grande in Round Rock or Hutto. Definitely the best Tex-Mex in the area!!

If you want something different, try Hudson’s on Bend. This is another place that screams culinary delights! Tempt your taste buds with samples of wild boar, Maryland crab cakes, veal, venison and lamb. Hudson is a wonderful place because of the variety of flavors, herbs, and spices. I find that many people from out of state scoff at this Central Texas dish.

I could go on and on about the hot spots in Austin for hours. One more thing worth mentioning and this got my creative juices flowing so I had to make dinner. Visit Zoot, a gourmet foodie’s paradise, and indulge in some amazing food.

Desserts at Zoot are creative and innovative. Suffice it to say, one of the owners was a former pastry chef. I’ll never know where he gets his ideas from, but every time I go, I’m always surprised by the variety of desserts and unusual prices. Try the ‘Tini’ for a fusion of fig, grapefruit and ginger. Unbelievable. Zoot is located at 509 Hearn.

We hope this helps you on your mission to visit the city’s best eateries. There are tons more. Bon appetit!
