The British Invasion: 1963-1969

In 1963, rock and roll was just rolling. But soon, almost overnight, a wave of change is about to happen. Rock ‘n’ roll took hold across the Atlantic in prosperous England, and the epidemic infected British youth across Britain. The sound was very similar in many ways, but there was something different and grown up. Whatever it was, American kids (especially girls) were jumping all over it. What started out as just a unique sound, along with the bands that created it, grew, evolved, changed, and would forever influence pop music. This musical movement would create a new genre of music and influence thousands of people.

The Beatles, four young men from Liverpool, England, will be at the forefront of it all. Not just other British bands, but the entire music scene from the 60’s to the 70’s. Songs like ‘Please, please me’, ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’ and ‘Hard Days Night’ had teenage girls swooning, crying and swooning. There hasn’t been a scene like this since Elvis Presley, with his amazing looks, unmistakable voice and hip-swiveling. The elders were disgusted but could do nothing. The Beatles, “The Zombies,” “The Animals,” “The Kingsman,” “The Hollies,” “The Kinks,” and “The Rolling Stones” took America by storm. Then came the Kinks’ Hollis tunes, ‘Bus Stop’, tunes and fast-paced, hard-rocking ‘You Really Got Me’, giving fans more variety in their stylistic choices. led to an ever-increasing appeal. In 1965, Rolling Stones lead guitarist Keith Richards hit an unforgettable 15-string guitar strum at the beginning of “Can’t Get No, (Satisfaction),” and a No. 1 classic was born. The song is also an example of how sexual lyrics can become.

The Rolling Stones are a prime example of bands that started to follow this style. And not just the British. People, led by Jim Morrison, the lead singer of the American group “Doors”, were considered very rude. Morrison’s on-stage antics were also legendary, and he was arrested at several shows.

Beyond the moral curve, America was rapidly changing, in a word, “growing up.” Growing pains, of course, came in the form of the sudden death of a young and popular president, an often violent civil rights movement, resentful wars, and distrust of government. Groups like the Beatles and Holly were laughed at in their youth, but now they’re grown up and singing about the issues of the day. The Who’s smash, ‘My Generation’ spoke of the ever-growing divide between the younger generations. hip a time when they refused to let go of their old ways, old fogies. The Beatles’ “Revolution” was a clear anti-government, anti-war anthem. The British invaders began to branch out in different directions. The Beatles were more self-aware and love themselves and others, while the Rolling Stones went for a harder sound. Late ’60s late arrival to the onslaught of hard rock and psychedelic sounds that will appeal to current and future lovers of this hard-driving sound. That group was Led Zeppelin. Helmed by iconic and charismatic lead singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page, Led will capture your attention, thrill and delight you with sexy, seductive lyrics, yes….that elusive voice.

Unfortunately, the music that came to us from across the pond and the artist that brought it made us happy, made girls scream, changed music and influenced musicians and artists now and in the future. Oh yeah, maybe a little broken in our way. It came, it conquered, it never left. Probably never.
