Think Music Theory Is Too Hard? Here’s Why

In my opinion (as a music professional of 35+ years), music theory is taught in the most confusing and painful way imaginable. An example of this is that students often encounter multiple sets of systems to explain the same thing in different classes.

For example, Scale Grades are referred to using terms such as numerals (0-9) in private lessons, roman numerals (both upper and lower case) in analysis, and tonic, submedian, dominant, etc. in theoretical lessons. “Solfege” (Do-Re-Mi) for ear training. What students don’t realize is that all these systems are related to the same basic thing: degrees of scale. And this is just one example!

Degree Naming Schemes…

  • Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
  • Name: Tonic, Supertonic, Median, Subdominant, Dominant, Subordinate, leading tone
  • Roman: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII
  • Solfege: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti

Can music theory be made easier to understand?

Yes, you can. All it takes is boiling the theory down to its simplest form. Then present it in an easier and smoother way to understand. For example. Let’s take a closer look at the scaled presentation above.

Instead of using different systems for private lessons, analysis, music theory classes, and ear training, we can use a standard number (0-9) for all of them. We’ve removed the hurdles of learning solfege before any musical function (including all the solfege names for notes that aren’t in the scale), the English names of each scale, and the correct use of upper and lower Roman numerals. can learn. Using the numbers 0-9, a system known to every student, we get right down to business. Again, this is just an example.

With consistency across the board, all of this can be easily learned and retained. If you plan to attend a college that requires all of these terms, you can always learn these terms and systems once you understand how music works. Trust me, it’s easier!

As mentioned earlier, this is an example of how something that could be explained simply has become unnecessarily complicated.

So the solution is not the current trend of complicating music theory, but simplifying it. I believe that the study of how music works can be boiled down to these two basic concepts… First, learn the basic scales. Then use the basic scale to learn everything else. Seems pretty simple to me!
