The Pink Hair Myth

Pink hair legend, that’s what my friend Penny calls it. There is a common but mistaken belief that to be creative you have to be artistic. Of course it’s more than pink hair, it can be a lifestyle, you know, wild hair, crazy clothes, garlic cigarettes, etc… Her style changes over the years, but she looks like a creative person.

Myth – Creativity is not about looking artistic. Yes, artists are creative, but everyone is creative! While artists channel their creativity into art, accountants channel their creativity into accounting. Creativity can be channeled into any challenge in life, so could we all use a little more creativity? Every work and life needs creativity!

I have nothing against pink hair, in fact sometimes it’s fun and even inspiring to see someone so expressive. But just because you look like an artist, or express yourself brilliantly with your clothes, doesn’t mean you’re more creative than the next person. Many pink-haired people try to be creative, conforming to the stereotype of a creative person. Some people with pink hair think that if they look at that part, others will follow. Not necessarily! The bottom line is that Pink Hair doesn’t make you think more creatively, and that’s where creativity starts. Where creativity ends, the most important thing is the mindset that brings you ideas. Ideas to help you solve problems in your life, relationships and career. Creativity is not just innovation, but useful innovation.

In my short, emotional, peak-and-valley TV career, I was engrossed in the legend of Pink Hair. In 1980, after years of knocking on doors, I landed a classic “creative” job in television production. I immediately stopped wearing casual business clothes and switched to jeans and a smart jacket. Black t-shirts filled my closet because black was nice. It became my uniform and it was no different – how creative is that? How have I been as a creative person? Well, sometimes I was able to come up with great creative ideas that took me on an emotional high. Other times I just couldn’t and had no thinking tools or techniques to get me out of my creative block, which sent me into depression. Because I wasn’t committed enough to the creative lifestyle at the time, I bent over backwards to look and act more creative with the blokes, stopped shaving, drank more and generally lived a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. I loved the music! I would often wake up feeling sleepy but creatively blocked!

I wish I knew then that creativity is not what you wear or how you look, but how you think. Creativity can be trained, nurtured, encouraged, and enhanced, and the way to do that is by changing the way you think.

For example, if I had known that self-criticism was my biggest inhibitor of creativity, I would have let my ideas flow when I was alone brainstorming. Instead of being in constant critique and analysis mode, I’ll just list them. Editing “on the fly” will keep you from dying and crying in frustration. Having pink hair only meant that I had higher expectations of myself, so I was much more strict with my grooming, even though I would have done it differently! To those looking to be more creative, just suspend judgment and list your ideas!

If I had known how important it was to write down my ideas, I would have invested in a $1.49 notebook and done so. Writing down your ideas alone can make a big difference – just by tapping into the ideas you’ve always had. Most of us think we will remember everything we think. How can we when we have 65,000 thoughts a day? This is average. Among those 65,000 thoughts are hidden ideas, or at least the seeds of ideas that we all need. Start writing, reviewing, and developing them, and you’ll win over his nail-biting pink-haired creative pants.

If I had known that alcohol and other mind-altering drugs slow down your thinking instead of opening it up, I would have cut back on that madness. Instead, I could have walked more, breathed deeply, eaten healthier, and gotten enough rest—things that would have helped me think more creatively. If you want to stimulate your mind – and this is a good idea – listen to classical music or jazz.

If I knew that my creativity would be more productive if I found ways to surprise myself, I would seek out more new experiences. The experience of learning something helps the mind make more new connections and is the stimulus it needs to feed itself with good ideas.

So, if you really must wear pink hair, more power to you. But make the choice to think more creatively when you’re coloring at the salon — be open, write down ideas, and try new things. Then you will not only look more creative, but also be more creative.
