What’s the Difference Between Stereo Speakers and PA Speakers?

When it comes to HiFi, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the breadth and variety of technology and terminology presented to you. We know that many of our customers are looking for answers, from connecting two cables to sensitivity through floorstands and phono stages.

One of the most common questions any AV supplier is asked is what is the difference between stereo speakers and PA speakers, and which is right for a business or school? Join us as we explain.

When we talk about “stereo speakers,” we’re basically talking about devices that can be plugged into a home stereo. They offer loud and dynamic sound designed to bring out the best in your music. The way stereo speakers do this varies by brand and model, but you’ll find innovations in cone placement, cabinet design, magnet placement, and other variables.

For your business, they will work fine, but may be overkill for basic work around the office, factory, or school. In fact, if you don’t plan on listening to music together, stereo speakers may not be the best choice for your business. Instead, you have to turn to PA speakers.

PA speakers, or public speakers, are used to deliver loud and clear sound to large areas such as offices. You’ll find them in a wide variety of spaces, from classrooms to factories and even nightclubs! Most importantly for us, they have a more robust design and are built for a wider variety of purposes.

You’ll find that PA speakers can be divided into “main speakers” that produce the bulk of the sound in a PA system, “subwoofers” that produce bass notes, and “live monitor speakers.” musicians can hear their individual contributions on stage.

In business and education, you often use the main speaker. There are two main types of PA speakers; passive and active. Passive speakers require the use of a mixer to mix and transmit sound, while active speakers plug directly into a power outlet and do not require additional equipment to produce sound.

Both have different advantages, passive speakers are better for more complex audio setups and active speakers are easier for less demanding applications, but both are suitable for education and business environments.
