Born on the gritty streets of Chicago, Illinois, Quincy Jones has worked his way up the music industry ladder as a musician, composer, arranger, and music studio producer. His work has been appreciated by many generations of music lovers and his talent has created musical wonders in many different styles and genres. Working with Celine Dion, Sinatra, Michael Jackson and many other important figures in jazz, Jones established himself as a true pioneer and influencer in jazz and pop music for generations to come.

Quincy Jones was born Quincy Delight Jones Jr. in early March 1933 on the South Side of Chicago. When Quincy was just 10 years old, his family moved to Seattle. Young Quincy developed an interest in music at school and played a variety of instruments in his school band. Then he decided to play the trumpet; After learning how to play and practicing for hours, he met a pianist named Ray Charles and formed a duet with him. Two talented young musicians quickly organized several concerts in small clubs, weddings and other events in the city. Quincy Jones then left Seattle to live in Boston and attend Berklee College of Music.

Once in Boston, Jones left Berkeley to tour under Lionel Hampton. After this tour, Jones headed to New York City, where he became a sought-after arranger; jazz royalty Dinah Washington, Cannonball Adderley, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Sarah Vaughan, and Ray Charles all hired Jones for their arranging services. In the 1950s, Jones joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band as trumpeter and musical director, returning from touring to record his own material for ABC Paramount Records. In 1957, Quincy Jones studied directing with none other than Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen; He also had the opportunity to play at the Paris Olympics and was appointed music director of Mercury Records distributor Barclay Disques.

After all these successful ventures, Quincy Jones moved into the world of manufacturing. His work began with Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad albums. Jones is also credited as a producer for Celine Dion, Anita Hall and many other notable names in the business. A music studio producer, Jones has been active since the 1950s and continues to make his mark on the music industry today.
