A Simple In Home Recording Set Up to Create High Quality Audio Products For Your Business
When I heard about podcasting almost three years ago, I knew I wanted to do it right away. After learning how, I decided to have a small recording studio at home to record my podcasts. With the guidance of my tech mentor, the webmaster, I was able to gather everything I needed to record very cheaply. He was able to shop around and get affordable gear and all the gear was user friendly.
If you’re thinking, “He can do that, he must be into technology,” you’d be very wrong. I’m a Baby Boomer woman, and when I was in college, computers were the size of a large room with climate control, so you had to make a key card to program the computer. Personal computers came along, and until I learned about podcasts, the most technical things I could do was create Word documents and open emails. But I learned, and if I can learn, so can you.
What is required for this simple home recording setup? Actually, it doesn’t take much. I have 7 pieces of equipment. I have a laptop (of course you can use your computer), a studio quality mic, a desk mic stand, a pop monitor, a converter, a mic mixer (for boosting) and a Y adapter cable (for hooking up a mixer). converter). That’s it.
I use an Audio-Technica Pro series vocal microphone (PRO 31 QTR). Wide-diaphragm condenser microphones are recommended for vocals, but I find that my 2.09-inch (53.1 mm) head diameter sounds great for my podcasts and CD recordings. This microphone comes with a cable and a mounting clip.
The mic stand I use is a desk style and comes from a stage stand. I use NADY’s metal pop screen, but there are many options that can be attached to your mic stand. The pop-screen reduces the pop and wind noises that occur when we say certain letters.
My mic mixer is from Radio Shack and is a 4 channel stereo mixer. It uses a 9 volt battery.
My converter is a Behringer (FCA202). It’s compact and really good value for money. It comes with a FireWire audio interface.
All my equipment has worked so well for over two years that I haven’t had to replace a single one; The model number must have changed.
The microphone receives the sound sent to the mixer, which sends it to the converter via the Y adapter cable. The converter does the magic of taking your voice in an analog signal and turning it into a digital signal that you send to your laptop and recording software via FireWire.
Now comes the software part. You will need recording and editing software. I’ve always used Audacity; It’s an open source software, so it’s free. (Audacity license fees may apply in some countries.) The software can be downloaded from the Audacity site. There are other fee-based programs like SONY Sound Forge.
You’ll also need software to export the audio files you create in your recording program to MP3 or WAV. The LAME recorder does this for you; It is also open source and free to download. (There may be a license fee for LAME in some countries.) Just Google the LAME encoder and it will take you to the site. Note that this does not work with all recording programs, but it does work with Audacity.
If I’m going to burn a CD of my recordings, I use WAV files to convert them to MP3 and WAV.
You might say that’s a lot…why don’t I record on the phone and use a program like Audio Acrobat? You can, but the sound quality is nowhere near the quality of my recommended settings. My recordings sound like they were recorded in a studio (except for phone interviews).
Sound quality is important when you’re offering long audio…especially if you’re recording for a home learning system or sending your lessons or lessons via MP3 download. After a while, the hissing and scratching sounds of phone recordings tire the listener’s ears. Why not go with the highest quality you can for your audience?
