What Does A Digital Bass Processor Do?

If you look at any serious car stereo system, you’ll notice that most have digital sound processors. When I first saw one of these I thought it was just an overpriced bass boost and my current amp would do basically the same thing. Little did I know that a bass processor is so much more than a bass boost.

A bass processor is installed before any crossover or signal processor. So it connects right after your control unit. Always install in front of your crossover. At first, you might think that a bass processor is only for bass heads. A bass processor can’t improve the low end of all music, from classical to rap. So what exactly does it do?

A good bass processor contains circuitry that properly recreates and injects low-frequency information into the signal, giving your bass more impact. A bass processor allows you to adjust this low power to your vehicle. It allows you to control the para-bass functions. It allows you to adjust the bass volume and width.

Sweep allows you to select specific frequencies that you want the bass recovery circuit to boost. With lower frequencies, the bass will be concentrated around the lower frequencies. A higher sweep means it will focus around higher frequencies. Width lets you control how wide the effect is across the frequency range. If you have a low width, the bass will be concentrated in a small frequency range, and making it higher will increase the frequency range.

So with all this bass processing going on, you might be worried about your expensive subwoofers. I know this was something I worried about when I first installed Audio Control’s “epicenter”, a popular bass processor. I was mainly concerned about sub-sonic frequencies that could damage your stereo.

If you look at any good bass processor, you’ll find something called a subsonic filter. Subsonic frequencies are frequencies that are inaudible to the human ear. A sound frequency lower than 20 Hz is considered a sound frequency. A good bass processor will have a subwoofer filter, which will ensure that your car stereo doesn’t waste any of its power on this sub-sonic information, making sure you’re making good use of all the system’s power.

The subwoofer filter is a great way to fine-tune the bass response. For most systems, setting this filter to 33Hz will be fine. If you want to protect the speaker, you can have a higher frequency. Often, higher frequencies sound louder and cleaner.

Whether your interest is Beethoven’s kettle drum, Miles Davis’ trumpet, or rap music’s percussion, the digital bass processor will restore lost bass notes.
