Advantages of Going ‘Pro’ – The Avid Mbox

Avid’s Mbox Pro is a more expensive and luxurious model of the Mbox, a long-respected recording interface for musicians and studio technicians. But with the success and amazing features of the regular Mbox, is it really worth paying the extra money to get the “Pro” model, or is it just bragging rights? Read on to find out.

One of the main differences between the standard Mbox and the Pro is the additional 4 channels (the regular Mbox only has 4, the Pro has 8). So, if you need to record 4+ channels simultaneously, you will need to use Mbox Pro.

But this is not the only difference. Another important difference between the units is that the Pro has better quality converters and preamps, which is a great selling point for audiophiles obsessed with recording quality.

The Pro is capable of recording at 192kHz (although at the time of writing, Pro Tools only supports recording at 96kHz, the same as standard Mbox).

A great feature is the 2-line input (1/4″ TRS), which is ideal for connecting active, high-gain input sources such as keyboards to the device.

One potential turn off for the Mbox Pro is that it uses FireWire to connect to your PC/Mac and has a separate power supply (unlike standard models that use USB 2.0 and don’t have a separate power supply). This means that the device is not as portable as cheaper models. If you want a very portable solution (i.e. laptop-based recording), avoid the Pro.

Another great feature of the Pro is that it supports 5.1 surround stereo, which cheaper models don’t. If you’re into video recording and/or mixing, this might concern you.

The Pro has a footswitch slot that lets you quickly and easily switch between Pro Tools functions while recording live. This is especially useful in a 1-man operation where you’re simultaneously playing the role of studio technician and recording artist.

Of course, the big question is, can the price of this device be increased? After all, it is almost 50% more expensive than the standard model. The answer to this question depends on whether you need additional functionality or not. If you can use 4-channel audio or less, don’t need 5.1 surround sound, or want a portable solution, a standard unit might be the way to go. You might want to look at the much cheaper ‘Mini’ which has 2 input channels.

In conclusion, the Mbox Pro is a very powerful recording device, packed with features that make it the centerpiece of professional recording. In the same train of thought, if you don’t need the extra features the Pro offers, it’s more economical to go with its cheaper cousins, the Mbox Standard or Mini.
