Constructing Ukulele Chords

The only way to know how a “ukulele chord” works is to learn how to write it, or how to build one. Chord notes make up the spelling. Notes are derived from the root scale and are identified using the Roman numeral system. It doesn’t always appear in Roman numerals, standard numerals serve the same purpose. Starting from the first note of the scale, the number system counts up to 8 (or 1) – the root.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8(1)

CDEFGABC

Now say you know that a major chord consists of the root note (1), the 3rd (3), and the 5th (5). You will remove these numbers (1, 3, 5) from the schedule – CE G.

1 3 5

CDEFGABC

If you play a C chord, you’ll notice that the CEG is the note you’re playing. The key to learning how to write chords is learning the notes you need to pick from the scale (CEG). So here is the spelling of the major chords.

Professional direction: 1 3 5

Minor: 1 b3 5

7th: 1 3 5 b7

b3 and b7 mean just that: take the 3rd or 7th mark on the scale and flatten it (move it to one twisted nut). The 3rd note is important to the chord because it gives the ethereal a happy (major) or sad (minor) sound. A normal 3rd indicates a major chord and a b3 indicates a minor chord.

Now I’ll show you how to do it in reverse. You need to know the Gm6 chord of the song you’re playing, and the only minor 6th chord you know is, say, Cm6. You can take that Cm6 and use it to find the Gm6. The notes for Cm6 are: C Eb G and A. Write the root scale and circle those notes.

(C) D (E) F (G) (A) B (C)

All notes are correct except Eb. To display Eb, simply align the number when adding to the scale.

1 b3 5 6

CDEFGABC

Given the number of notes, you can add them to the G scale to find Gm6.

1 b3 5 6

GABCDEF# G

Same number, different scale.

So take a notation below the numbers (G Bb DE) and place them on the keyboard so they can be played. You will have the word 0201.

Some chord spellings will have too many notes to fit in ‘ukulele’, so you’ll have to opt out of some. Note that some notes are more important than others in the sound of a chord.

Other spelling mistakes include:

6th specialty: 1 3 5 6

7th profession: 1 3 5 7

Add 9: 1 3 5 9

9th key: 1 3 5 7 9 (omit root)

6/9: 1 3 5 6 9 (leave the root)

9th: 1 3 5 b7 9 (leave root) [Extended chord are chords that add notes to a 7th shape.

Being as the ‘ukulele is already maxed out note wise with a 7th chord, these are not

very practical to figure out. Each extension does add a different sound, but for

every new sound you must omit a note. Extended chords include 11th and 13th chords.]

Minor 6: 1 b3 5 6

Minor 7: 1 b3 5 b7 [Again, minor 7ths have extensions – see above.]

Reduced: 1 b3 b5 6

Extended: 1 3 #5
