The Best Classic Rock and Blues Albums You Never Heard Of

If you’re into classic rock and blues, chances are you haven’t heard most of the bands and CDs in this article. I like to discover groups that have been overlooked and that immediately catch my attention. My only criteria was that they had to be a band that most people in the US had never heard of, had only one album per group, and no “Best Of” albums (with one exception). Some bands, like The Blues Band & Cuby and the Blizzards, are well known in their home countries but not as well known in the US. Albums are listed alphabetically by group, album title, CD company, and year the album was first recorded.

Bacon Fat “Blue Horizon Plenary Session” Sony 1971

American blues band fronted by Rod Piazza, making Chicago blues with an incredibly dirty and authentic sound. It’s actually a compilation album with a lot of live stuff added.

Blonde “rebirth” Phantom Sound & Vision 1970

Great vocals and great vocals from Dave Thomas, who sounds like Roy Orbison of Welsh Opera playing with a great rock band.

Cuby & the Blizzards “Tripping Thru A Midnight Blues” (Three Originals) Universal 1968

A legendary Dutch blues band featuring the great English voice of Cubby (Harry Muskie) and the deliciously sweet lead guitar of Eilko Gelng, who was asked to replace Peter Green in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. It’s the blues, baby.

Betterdays “No Concessions” Aftermath Records 1994

White boys rock the blues. The Betterdays were an English blues band from the 60’s who reunited in the late 90’s to record their first album, recording their debut in the studio as they had little to record for posterity. It’s a vintage 60s British blues band playing R&B like there’s no tomorrow.

Blues Band “The Official Bootleg Album” BGO 1979

Perhaps the most famous of the group, featuring former Manfred Mann frontman Paul Jones on vocals and harp, guitarist Tom McGuinness, and slide guitar and Dave Kelly on vocals, this is their first album and a great Chicago blues album. Incredibly energetic in an English style.

A Comprehensive Way to Experience Wood Hills 1971

The first of our Zombies bands is a great compliment. This group has great originality, great keyboards, and great harmonies. This band recorded even better material on their previous album, but unfortunately the recording quality was very poor due to where they recorded their first recording, so I recommend this album because the sound quality was better.

Dr. K’s Blues Band “Rock This Joint” Akarma 1968

This album has an amazing groove that I can’t put into words. John Mayal was once led by Jeff Krivet of the Bluesbreakers. Dr. K on piano, Eric Peachey on drums, and if they were a 60’s British Blues Boom band playing Chicago Blues, the band sounds like what the band would sound like if someone lit fireworks up their ass!

Forever Ember “Love Cycle” Wood Hills 1969

Imagine poor man’s Zombies doing poor man’s Odyssey and Oracle, and I mean that as the highest compliment. These are personal recordings of these guys who never knew how amazing they could be with modern equipment, but they sound amazing.. If you’re a Zombies fan, you should get this. One of the best sounding albums. Strangely enough, according to the record, they barely managed to cover any of these songs live. Great keyboards, vocals, vocal harmonies, original songs and productions.

Jerusalem “Jerusalem” Universal Japan 1972

One of the greatest riff rock albums ever. Imagine Deep Purple without arms, which is probably why Ian Gillian created this hard rock masterpiece. Absolute balls to the wall with amazing vocals, guitars, great originals, everything.. These guys should have been stars.

Jodo “Belly” Lion 1971

Heavy 1971 Cream like Heavy Superb Blues Rock. They sound like Cream if they had Randy California, RIP, Spirit and vocals on guitar instead of Clapton.

Killing Floor “Killing Floor” repertoire 1969

Imagine Led Zeppelin playing the blues while high on amphetamines. These are the blues, played with an adrenaline rush like you’ve never heard before.

Mahogany “Mahogany”

Great British blues rock, great melodic blues songs, John McCain’s guitar, great guitar on lead, Steve Darrington’s really sweet harmonica. These guys look like Carpenters, but they are stable. First written in 1969

Otis Spahn’s biggest thing since 1969’s Colossus (Sony).

The entire Otis Spahn album features blues compositions by Fleetwood Mac classic blues guitarists Peter Green, Danny Kirwin and bassist John McPhee, and was produced by legendary blues producer Mike Vernon. All songs were recorded in one take without any overdubs and the performance is hot and great.

Grief “Take Heart” Castle 1968

It’s a great Garage Rock freakbeat style by the legendary 60’s English rock band that was never released in the US. All the songs on this album are perfect, the drums are great, the bass plays the perfect notes, the guitars are amazing and the singer is just as amazing as the songs. “Take A heart” is considered a classic, “She’s Got the Action” is a great song and “We Should Get Along Fine” is one of the best.
