Unless you’re writing something technical or academic, writing a book requires a lot of creativity. In order for your readers to enjoy your story, you need to be able to drive. There must be highs and lows, tears and joys, successes and failures, and all the other emotional triggers that draw readers into your book.


Some people have organized thoughts; others are not. For those who do not possess this gift, there is a way to organize their thoughts, and that is to learn to focus. Planning is a key component here, and I’ll explain it in the “steps” section.

Meditation helps a lot to organize your thoughts. Prayer and Bible reading are the best meditation for me while playing an instrument. Walking outside and enjoying nature helps me focus on personal time.


Your book will do well if your target audience can relate to it. This means your topic must be relevant. There’s no point in writing a book about winter if you’re writing for a group that hasn’t experienced that kind of weather. By the way, you should know your market position before writing. When writing, always consider how they will feel and how they will react. In short, put yourself in their shoes as a reader.


Without a goal, your book will have no direction. You may not be able to start typing it. And even if you start it, you may not be able to finish it. Your book’s purpose should be the foundation and main source of inspiration for your writing.

Time is of the essence when it comes to book publishing, and even more so if your topic or subject matter needs to be relevant NOW. Consider the best season to publish your book. Is it better to launch during or before Christmas? Would it be wiser to be in bookstores by summer? It all depends on your topic and marketing strategy. You can work towards your money goals, but at least you’ll have something to work towards. I know writers who have finished their books but had no money to publish them, and that is certainly disappointing.

Yes, you can walk by faith, which is what I did in the first edition of my book. But that faith is matched with determination, and it works.


I know some people who said they were going to write a book, and years went by and they didn’t start writing anything. Some started writing but got distracted halfway through and never came back. Others are talking about the second or third book without even finishing the first.

The best way to do this is to start when you’re ready to go all out. “Strike the iron while it’s hot”…and move on. Don’t waste your energy.

1. Have a general theme in your book.

For example, if your topic is “women,” you can narrow it down to “married women” and “Christian married women.” From there, you can narrow down the topics you want to focus on, such as “submission to your husband.”

2. Know your market niche or target audience.

I have already given a specific example of the market above. “Married Christian Women” is the main thing in the market. You should be as specific and narrow as possible so that it is easy to write and market the book.

If you’re writing about financial planning, you need to know who your target market is. Not to say it’s for everyone. You have to be really interested in it and determine who needs it. What gender … age bracket … social status … religious beliefs?

3. Write an outline and work from there.

Don’t start writing a book without a plan. This is the only way you can stick with it and increase your chances of success.

Your plan should include the entire timeline from writing to selling your book. I suggest you work backwards. Start with the time you want to market your book and work backwards.

Publication can take about a month or two after manuscript submission, or even longer. If you have an editor who is separate from your publisher, you should include that in your schedule. I give my clients more than 3-4 weeks depending on the size of the book revision. If your publisher will do the marketing for you, ask them how long it will take from publication to launch. If you’re going to do your own marketing, you’ll need to consider where you’ll be promoting your book, how long it will take for those places and visitors.

Book promotion covers pre-launch, actual launch, and post-launch. The pre-launch phase is all about introducing your book to an audience that is interested and eager. The actual launch is the big launch that introduces your book to the public. Before that, you should take care of press releases, invitations and other preparations. Starting an article requires more sales, including talks, interviews and other means of promotion.
