In the Job Shadow – Cinematography Careers

Backstage

Although he recently graduated from New York City’s Tisch School of the Arts, cinematographer Ryan Richmond made his mark in the film industry last year. His secret? Paying attention. While in high school, the Washington, D.C. student interned for Discovery Channel, editing for CNN and working for BET. He believes that the best time to start a film career is when you are a student. “Any company is more likely to open the door to an internship for a high school student,” Richmond asserts. “They’re more available and easier to get when you’re young.” Richmond continued to make his presence known as he majored in film and television production with a concentration in film at the prestigious Tisch School. During the summer, he worked as a direct marketing consultant in the Entertainment Imaging Division of Eastman Kodak in New York, New York. He has also done independent camera work on small budget features and music videos. “Freelancing was an extension of the classroom,” he explains. “I applied what I learned in school.”

The camera is rolling

Perhaps the biggest learning experience of Richmond’s career was working as a camera intern on Spike Lee’s recent film The 25th Hour. “This was the final episode,” Richmond announced. “In return for working for him, I got unlimited backstage passes.” Another highlight of his was directing the short film Money Matters, which was nominated for the Gordon Parks Award for Independent Film Projects in 2001 to showcase and encourage African-American work in the IFP market. “It was the first short film to be nominated for an award,” he boasts. “It’s a good experience to learn how to create about a really emotional subject,” says Richmond, who is currently in Washington, D.C., producing Faith Based Recovery, a documentary for the Faith-Based Recovery Program.

And… Action!

Richmond has one caveat about a career in filmmaking: Filmmaking is not just that. “It’s a tough industry to come out of,” he warned. “Be prepared to work your way up and pay your dues.” But for this filmmaker, the pros outweigh the cons. “I love to tell stories and create beautiful visuals,” he shared. “If you’re doing what you want to do, it’s worth it.” Ultimately, Richmond’s advice to future filmmakers is to get an education. “The school teaches you the technical side of the filmmaking profession, which really helps when you’re working in the industry,” he said. “It puts you in the league before the game.”
