Daily Life Therapy (Higashi) for Autism

Daily Living Therapy (DLT), also known as Higashi, was developed in the 1960s by Dr. Kiyo Kitahara of the Musashino Higashi Gakuen School in Tokyo, Japan. She developed this method through what she learned teaching children with autism in a regular education kindergarten classroom. Her main goal was to develop self-esteem and emotional security in children with autism.

Higashi, a Japanese word meaning “hope,” is a holistic approach to learning together in a group where children with autism are paired with other normal children. This approach uses a number of methods, including group dynamics, modeling, physical activity, art, music, academics, and systematic education including vocational training.

How DLT (Higashi) works

Behavior management in DLT does not involve ignoring, punishing, time-out procedures or measuring through medication. DLT is not intended to treat or treat Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but is believed to have other important benefits, such as improving abilities, flexibility, and functional skills while being with the inner community, as well as engaging in family activities.
