People First Language

The language used can be very important when working with people with special needs. The average person may not understand the importance of words of support and meaning, but for family members and professionals who work with these individuals, it is vital.

In the 1990s, there was a human movement. It was meant to remind everyone that people with special needs are people first and people with disabilities second. For example, they were not children with autism, but children with autism. They were adults with cerebral palsy. By placing the person before their disability, we saw not just the person but their problem. By changing the public’s approach to children and adults with special needs, it made sense and had tremendous results.

Fast forward twenty years. It looks like we’ve moved on to disability first. Children on the spectrum are once again children with autism. People with cognitive deficits and delays are called retarded. All the work done to promote the individual has fallen by the wayside.

Parents and loved ones of these wonderful people worked hard to clarify their personalities. Referring to them as disabled primarily dehumanizes them. When promoting their loved one, they often share their strengths: they have a sense of humor, love to talk about cars, and are talented in music. These are important things. They are what make an individual special. Their diagnosis is of secondary importance.

Many may see this as political consensus gone awry. Differences here affect how others treat people with special needs. For many people, disability is obvious. They need support to communicate. They need a device to navigate their space. They need redirection to follow simple instructions. The world doesn’t need to be reminded of the struggles they face every day. A reminder of the remarkable man behind these limitations.

When talking about people with special needs, remember that they are people first. They are a child with Down syndrome or an adult with autism. The person should always be the focus of the notification. Disability is only one part of them; not the whole being. It is important that we always remember this. Individuals and their families will thank us for this.
