Seven Essential Depression Treatments

Limiting the treatment of depression to antidepressant medication and psychological counseling is a serious flaw. While these methods may work for some people, it is very problematic to see them as the only strategy anyone should follow.

One big problem is that the term “depression” covers a wide range of conditions. For example, reactive depression occurs after a person goes through an unpleasant experience, while melancholic depression appears to come from anywhere and is biologically based. Leading psychiatrists often think that these two types of depression are treated differently. Depression is often a complex illness with many factors at play, so it’s important to consider things that can not only improve your mood, but also lead to a more fulfilling life after recovery, from suicidal thoughts to struggles.

In the research I did for my first book, I also asked individuals who were treated for depression at the Black Dog Institute (one of the world’s leading emotional pathology units). A more holistic picture of the most effective strategies emerges from this live dialogue. From this research and from interviews with thousands of depressed people and their loved ones, we have come up with a list of 7 essential treatments for depression: exercise, support from family and friends, psychological counseling, fulfilling work, and meditation/relaxation. , nutrition and medicine.

1. Exercise

Two research studies have shown that exercise is the most effective treatment for depression and has positive effects not only on mental health but also on physical health. Because exercise is free, relatively little research funding has been spent on evaluating the effectiveness of exercise (compared to medication) in the treatment of depression. Dr. Andrea Dunn of the United States has studied the amount of exercise needed to combat depression and found that brisk walking for 30 minutes 6 days a week is as effective as or better than all medications.

2. Support from family and friends

People with depression will tell you how important the support of loved ones is when dealing with depression, because it’s strange that family and friends can feel like they’re pushing themselves during these difficult times. In interviews with both parties who have been troubled for some time, they suggested the following methods: learning about the different types of depression and the most effective treatment strategies, improving communication, and helping to find and develop the right mental health care for people with depression. build a support network for them and get help and support from a caregiver.

3. Psychological counseling

The most effective treatments for depression include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IT), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). CBT shows clients how to challenge unhelpful thoughts by writing down some of these negative thoughts and then arguing with them. IT shows how depressed people can be more confident in their relationships, as it has been shown that they are often inactive in identifying their own wants and needs. MBCT combines mindfulness meditation techniques with CBT principles.

4. Executive work

It’s well-documented how important work (whether paid or volunteer) is to a person’s mental health. However, surprisingly, people with depression rated it higher than the drug. In my 12 years in recruiting and interviewing over 6,000 people, I know that a huge percentage of people (up to 60% in some studies) are neither engaged nor happy. Retrenchments and extended hours for those who remain on the job compound the problem. The key is to identify a job that allows you to use the skills you enjoy and are good at.

5. Relaxation/Meditation

The ability to sit with yourself without interruption is one of the losses of today’s 24/7 life. Peace of mind is a necessary skill in this world of constant stimulation and distraction. For some people it’s meditation, for others it might be listening to music, playing with their pets, gardening, sewing, or some other hobby. Many people say this is a very difficult thing to do when you are so busy, but with practice it motivates those who persevere. Also, getting enough sleep each night is important to feeling rejuvenated. Many people with depression find this difficult, but there are proven ways to make sleep more restful.

6. Nutrition

While much has been said about the importance of eating right to improve physical health, it is interesting to see just how important good nutrition is to mental health. There are many websites and books on the subject, but basically stick to a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables with a little lean protein. Drinking plenty of water, eating fish (or taking an Omega 3 supplement), and getting vitamin D in the sun are all very helpful. Only moderate amounts of alcohol should be consumed.

7. Drug treatment

For some people, medication is a godsend to improve their mood, while for others it can be a very frustrating road that seems to have been studied by trial and error. What makes this so difficult is that one drug may work wonders for one person, while another may be ineffective and cause disturbing side effects for another. The most important factor here is to be examined by a highly qualified psychiatrist and get an accurate diagnosis. Often the correct diagnosis is the key to prescribing the correct medication.

The lifestyle strategies outlined above should be your first line of attack. If your depression symptoms don’t improve significantly after 2 weeks, you should talk to your doctor about medication. It’s ironic that people don’t hesitate to take diabetes or high cholesterol medications, but they feel that taking anti-depressants is a personal disadvantage. It would be foolish to expect medication to be a silver bullet without considering the lifestyle depression treatments mentioned above.

This brief overview of 7 essential strategies to overcome depression as quickly as possible is only intended as an introduction. We recommend that you seek them all, not only to overcome depression, but also to prevent relapse. If these methods are followed regularly, you can come out of depression with a more fulfilling life than before.
