Managing Your Time, when Music isn’t Your "Day Job"

You can do everything.

Repeat.

You can do everything. But what you can’t do is do it all at once, or make a day longer than 24 hours.

The two most important aspects of time management are recognition and choice. When it comes to accepting and choosing time, you are never “wrong”, “bad”, or “lazy”, you just made certain choices. If you think about discipline and willpower, your inner critic can really do a lot for you. As artists, we already have low self-esteem; Let’s not add to the problem!!

An example of this is that I chose to live alone rather than with a roommate; This means I also need to choose a higher rent and bring in enough income to cover that rent. When the hidden thoughts of resentment and self-pity creep into my head, I need to remember the choices I made and accept that this is the way it is for now.

Here are some tips for managing your time to use choice and recognition.

Decide what you want to spend time on. What gets pushed to the back burner or rushed? After fulfilling your songwriting dream and becoming an artist, how do you spend your time? Nurture this vision until it becomes clear in your mind. It is important to know what you are working for. Remember, you will always be this busy unless you choose to be.

Choose to be this busy – track your time for one week using the time log. You can do it yourself; Simply sketch out your day (on paper or on the computer) at fifteen minute intervals, then record what you do for each time. Filling out a time log will show how much time you spend on different things. Be careful about the choices you make. What do you most want to do with the time you have?

Accept the daily chores, the financial support you need to eat and live, and write songs! Instead of resenting the time you’re taking away from writing songs, practice being grateful for the work you have. For example, what recording equipment, CDs, manuscripts, software, or musical instruments did you buy with the money you earned from this job? Also, work gives you many opportunities to experience life and interact with other people. Communicating with people through your music is a passion of yours – how do you take some of that passion and apply it to your everyday interactions? What stories will your colleagues tell? What ideas do these give you that you can use in your writing?

Find a “day job” that makes sense and moves you in the direction of your dreams. Do you need some ideas? Try meditation for inner wisdom and spiritual guidance. If songwriting is your primary passion, what is your second passion? What else gets your juices flowing? You don’t need to do work that doesn’t feel like you’re alive to support what you’re doing. Some artists I know get great satisfaction from teaching children or adults about their craft. Others do public speaking to give them more experience and confidence when speaking to groups. Some get jobs in music stores, where they get to see the latest equipment, meet lots of artists, get discounts, and time to boot!

Schedule time for writing, collaborating, and rehearsing with yourself. Save these dates as sacred meetings for yourself and others!

Be good to your body and don’t sacrifice sleep for productivity (if you keep doing that, you won’t be good at producing anything!).

We only have a few things to do each day. Everything else is optional.
