World Renowned Teacher of Voice, Anthony Frisell, Provides Training Manuals

Anthony Frisell, a world-renowned voice teacher for aspiring international opera singers, has updated and republished three vocal guides: Tenor Voice, Soprano Voice, and Baritone Voice. They provide an intensive, in-depth and comprehensive response to those looking to start a serious career or pursue advanced training. My review is for The Soprano Voice, but the basics are the same for all three voices.

For too many people who surround themselves with music and perhaps learn to emulate some of today’s stars, they begin to consider a career in singing. Reality shows that there is an easy path to success, but this is not true. A professional singer must learn to protect, train and practice his new voice!

To find the path to success, Frisell first describes the “Mental Imagery Approach.” This means that “all vocal practice must be used indirectly through mental awareness.” (p. 7) The beginner then understands what to expect in order to become a professional. Having sung in various bands for most of my life, it was no surprise to me that I had never learned to sing properly. Learning and following sound standards is lifelong learning in a professional environment and with a master!

There are fixed rules that form the right mental image. Grand opera began in Italy, and the first rule was to ensure the purity of all vowels in order for the singer to communicate with the audience. Specifically, “Each of the five classical vowels u (oo) i (ee), e (eh), o (oh), a (ah) pronounced by native Italians must be mastered in their purest form. The entire range of the voice.” (p. 8)

The next established rule is that without control, our voices are unreliable, and therefore subject to Control. This book includes the results of all controls, including breath dynamics, range, flexibility, and tone shading.

Professional singers are also required to have basic knowledge of music and be able to play a musical instrument, preferably the piano. In addition, it is necessary to learn several foreign languages.

Many of us don’t understand how or why we can sometimes touch certain notes and not others. This is simply explained by the need to identify a person’s voice register. Frisell notes, “To master the art of improved singing, one must know the roles of both vocal registers and develop them fully, so that they work together as a unit of quality and power.” (p. 11) This is not easy to do. However, Frisell effectively takes each problem in the process, identifies and explains them, and then goes on to show how a single unit develops.

Determine the break of women using the image of the hand. The lower register comes from the “chest voice”, while the upper range comes from the “head voice”. Because there is a constant conflict between these registers, it provides a governing principle. “The muscular tension that occurs between the two vocal registers when trying to produce a pure, high-pitched tone represents a natural response to the kinetic energy (respiratory tension) acting on the muscles of both registers.” (p. 16).

There are years of training, practice, and listening to and learning from experts who are already masters of the art of opera in order to progress from a normal singer to a professional. This guide introduces you to the mechanics of this study and provides an amazing variety of exercises, detailed descriptions of where the sounds should be, how the tongue and voice are affected, and more.

Frisell provides “The Personal Guide to Mastering the Best Singing Techniques.” In fact, the only thing missing is that Frisell isn’t there, helping the individual in this effort. This is a must read for serious voice students. Most recently, Frisell asked, “Is there an ‘American School’ of classical voice training? If so, has it failed American singers?” A copy of the article was included.

By the way, the author gives master classes and is based in New York. I think only very serious students should apply! This person will either recognize you as a potential great singer… or you’ll know the answer to the question he posed in the article above.
