Beatles Songs That Are Better in Mono – "Day Tripper" & "Eleanor Rigby"

When The Beatles came along in the early 1960s, mono was considered the musical standard. The music that The Beatles listened to was mono, and almost all of their fans listened to their music in mono. At the time, stereos were considered “high-end audiophiles” who were more interested in classical or jazz music.

Because of this, The Beatles and their production team did not spend much time on their stereo mix. They spent most of their time mixing mono versions of their songs. In contrast, the stereo versions were “thrown together” as “experiments”.

Most of their stereo mixes (especially the earlier tracks) sound pretty alarming by today’s standards. Many of them have all the vocals on one side and all the drums on the other! This is especially a problem when listening with headphones (another important point is that as many people listened to music with headphones in the 1960s as they do now.)

With the release of The Beatles in Mono Box Set, many Beatles fans were able to hear their songs in mono for the first time (until now, only stereo mixes of many of their songs were available on CD).

Two examples of songs that, in my opinion, sound much better in mono than in stereo are 1965’s “Day Tripper” (which is heard in mono on the Mono Masters compilation included in the Mono Box Set) and 1966’s “Eleanor Rigby” (this one). (Available in mono on the mono version of Revolver included in The Beatles in Mono Box Set.)

In the stereo version of “Day Tripper”, the vocals are pushed to the right and the drums to the left. It’s very annoying to listen to on headphones. Obviously everything is mixed right in the middle for the mono version. This gives it a very “powerful” sound.

The stereo version of “Eleanor Rigby” has the strings in the middle, while the verse solo is tight (and basically nothing to the left.) It’s a very distorted mix, and I think it sounds better in mono. .
