The Beatles Timeline 1957-1964

At the age of 17, John Lennon formed his first band with classmates at Quarry Bank Grammar School. They were briefly known as the Black Jacks before changing their name to the Quarry Men. The music was a mix of skiff, folk, jazz and blues popular at the time. Their first gig was in the back of a truck on Roseberry Street and they didn’t get paid.

In 1957, the group met Paul McCartney, a left-handed guitarist. The band was performing in a church hall, and after the performance, Paul auditioned and was immediately invited to join the band. McCartney debuted with the band at the Clubmore Hall in Liverpool and Broadway.

In 1958, the music became more rock and roll, forcing the banjo player to leave the band. Paul then introduced his old classmate and friend George Harrison, who joined the band the following year.

The Quarry Men broke up in 1959, but Lennon and McCartney continued to record songs together. Harrison joined a group called the Junior Steward’s Quartet, but when it disbanded, he joined a group of career men who reunited to fulfill some commitments. After this last gig, Lennon McCartney and Harrison called themselves Johnny and the Moondogs before changing their name to The Beatles in early 1960, but in May of that year they changed their name again to The Silver Beatles and supported Johnny Gentle on tour. In February 1961 the boys played a series of gigs in and around Liverpool for the first time at the Cavern Club. In May, the boys toured with Roy Orbison and their third single, From Me To You, stayed in the charts for seven weeks. This led to the BBC having their own show, Pop Goes The Beatles.

They played their last show at the Cave in August 1963, the same month as the Great Train Robbery. In September, their single She Loves You topped the charts for four weeks. In October, they appeared at the London Palladium on a Sunday night, surrounded by hundreds of adoring fans. By November, Beatlemania was in full swing and it was a taste of things to come as their single She Loves You spent another two weeks at No.1. In December, their single I Wanna Hold Your Hand topped the charts for five weeks.

Beatlemania was in the air when the band toured the US for the first time in December 1963. They appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and were watched by 73 million people. The boys are making their debut at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. The boys made it to nationals – but that was just the beginning.

The boys returned to the UK in March 1964 after their first visit to the US and the height of Beatlemania. They made their first step, Hard Day’s Night, and recorded an album of the same name. John Lennon published his first book, Own Write.

In April, their single Can’t Buy Me Love topped the UK and US charts. They also broke records with 5 singles on the US charts and 11 in the top 100, a feat that no other artist has since accomplished. In July, the single “A Hard Day’s Night” topped the charts for three weeks at the time of the film’s release. August sees the boys embark on their first American tour. In October and November of the same year, the boys toured Great Britain. In December, I Feel Fine topped the charts for 5 weeks.
